A Note From The Wimbledon Community Association (WCA)

Welcome to Community Bytes, a quarterly e-newsletter that brings you Merton related community news, alongside a range of other topics and events happening across our borough. In this end of year edition, we reflect on 2019 and continue to celebrate everything from our borough's creativity to new multisensory children's libraries with our Merry Merton advent calendar!

For this special edition, we caught up with two of our listed venues - the New Horizon Centre (more specifically the Commonside Trust) in Mitcham, and Everyday Church in Wimbledon - to find out about all of the great things that have been happening throughout the year at different sides of the borough. For our Wimblecomm spotlight, we caught up with small independent community project Fayre & Square, and we featured a review of the Twelfth Night production by Carlton Theatre Group at the Colour House Theatre. We even managed to provide you with a round up of our charity's 2019 with a review from our Chair, David Hall. As always, the content continues on our blog so be sure to keep an eye on our website for updates in between these newsletters.

We do hope you enjoy reading this edition of Community Bytes, and encourage you to connect with us on social media to stay updated on all Wimblecomm matters. If you would like to receive future editions straight to your inbox, make sure you visit us at Wimblecomm and subscribe.

Our listed events cater to people of all ages and backgrounds so do browse through and feel free to share amongst your friends, family, and anyone else in the community who may be interested.

Wimblecomm Spotlight - Fayre & Square

Have you noticed the small gift shop on the Upper Mall of Centre Court Shopping Centre next to Wimbledon Station? It’s open mostly between 10am and 4pm Tuesday to Saturday, but over the last few months a little bit more?

Fayre & Square Wimbledon is a community project run by volunteers, and is a small independent project partly self-funded by renting space out to small local businesses and craftspeople, who also contribute a commission and volunteering time. The perfect place to get hold of unique handmade items made by local artists, some of which can be personalised! It is an Aladdin’s cave of original cards, pottery, crocheted items, hand painted, sewn or decoupaged gifts. The baby gifts are incredibly popular, as are the original glass art and hand poured soya candles. Continue reading this article on our blog to learn more about their employability scheme which helps individuals with any perceived barriers to employment, and hear about some of their wonderful success stories.

2019 End of Year Round-Up

A round up from the WCA, two Wimblecomm listed venues, and a celebration of the whole borough with Merry Merton

WCA - Chair's Review of 2019

Whilst we always do a formal annual review as part of our AGM, we thought it would be good to end the year with a quick synopsis of how things went in 2019 for us here at the Wimbledon Community Association.

From our internal review of the Wimblecomm service at the start of the year, through to our relaunched site and the recruitment of new Trustees and Volunteers, it has been another busy year for the WCA. Click here to read more.

The Year 2019 with Everyday Church

On your travels, many of you may have passed Everyday Church on Queens Road. Some of you may have even had the pleasure of going inside to attend an event in one of their many wonderful spaces for hire.

In this article, Everyday Church invite us into their church to share some of their 2019 highlights and show where they’ve had a positive impact in our community. Click here to read more on our blog.

The Year 2019 with the Commonside Trust & New Horizon Centre

Join the Commonside Trust for a whistle stop tour of some of the good things that they made happen in their part of Merton this year.

As they walk us through each month of 2019, we are reminded of the great importance of our community venues, and look forward to supporting them for yet another year. Click here to read more.

Merry Merton 2019

For the second consecutive year, we are running our #MerryMerton social media campaign to celebrate all of the great things that have happened in Merton in 2019! Visit our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to see what we've celebrated this December.

If you or your venue weren't included this time around but you still have some good news to share, send an email to general@wimbledoncommunity.org with your stories, and we will be happy to feature you on our blog or in our Wimblecomm Spotlight series.

"And The Show Must Go On" - A Carlton Theatre Group Review

"Indeed it has, and with showtime luck it will continue. I am talking about Wimbledon’s Carlton Theatre Group (formerly the Carlton Dramatic Society) which has been in existence since the late 1920’s. Their very significant 100th birthday is looming which is quite remarkable given these busy times and lots of competition over the years from other local theatre groups...And of course, like any theatre group there has been lots of drama on stage and off!" Getting Involved in the Community

Merton's First Community Fridge

This month, the borough's leading environmental charity Sustainble Merton have started raising funds to launch Merton's first Community Fridge.

A Community Fridge is essentially just a big fridge, to be located in an accessible, friendly space where individuals and businesses can donate fresh edible food and members of the community can take what they want or need.

Diana Sterck, Chief Executive of Sustainable Merton said: “The Community Fridge will complement existing food banks, benefiting those most in need but also extending the offering to the wider community. It is a desired outcome of the work led by Sustainable Merton on Merton’s Food Poverty Action Plan which seeks to tackle people’s inability to afford, or have access to, quality food for a healthy diet.” Read more here.
