WCA - Chair's Review of 2019

Whilst we always do a formal annual review as part of our AGM, we thought it would be good to end the year with a quick synopsis of how things went in 2019 for us here at the Wimbledon Community Association.

On your travels, many of you may have passed Everyday Church on Queens Road. Some of you may have even had the pleasure of going inside to attend an event in one of their many wonderful spaces for hire.

"And The Show Must Go On" - A Carlton Theatre Group Review

"Indeed it has, and with showtime luck it will continue. I am talking about Wimbledon’s Carlton Theatre Group (formerly the Carlton Dramatic Society) which has been in existence since the late 1920’s. Their very significant 100th birthday is looming which is quite remarkable given these busy times and lots of competition over the years from other local theatre groups...And of course, like any theatre group there has been lots of drama on stage and off!" Merton's First Community Fridge 

This month, the borough's leading environmental charity Sustainble Merton have started raising funds to launch Merton's first Community Fridge.

A Community Fridge is essentially just a big fridge, to be located in an accessible, friendly space where individuals and businesses can donate fresh edible food and members of the community can take what they want or need.

Diana Sterck, Chief Executive of Sustainable Merton said: “The Community Fridge will complement existing food banks, benefiting those most in need but also extending the offering to the wider community. It is a desired outcome of the work led by Sustainable Merton on Merton’s Food Poverty Action Plan which seeks to tackle people’s inability to afford, or have access to, quality food for a healthy diet.” Read more here.

Merton Horizon Project - Day Centre for Street Sleepers Now Open

From Monday 2nd December to 31st March 2020, Commonside Community Development Trust are providing day provisions for street sleepers at the New Horizon Centre.

Those sleeping rough in Merton can go to the centre from 8.30am Monday to Friday where they can:
– Watch TV
– Have a free two-course hot lunch
– Get help with benefits or paperwork
– Play table games
– Use the outdoor gym
– Find out about/engage with other activities including volunteering
