February Marketing: #LoveRoncy

This February, the RVBIA will be using the hashtag combo #LoveRoncy #ShopRoncy on posts on our social media channels to promote all things lovable about/on Roncesvalles. We will be encouraging the community to post photos of what they love along Roncy. While this is a tie in with Valentine’s day, we will be using the whole month to remind shoppers of all things ‘loveable’ on Roncy. (You’ll notice our TTC shelter ad and screen ad before films at the Revue Theatre) Throughout the month, Members should use both tags when posting on social media. This will help us find them and share to help promote your business and the Winter specials or promotions you're running.

Post Suggestions & Tips:

  • Share your cut-off for Valentine reservations (or alternate dates), flower arrangements orders, gift orders, deliveries, etc.
  • Have customers you really love? This month is a great month to share that.
  • Love your mail, delivery etc person? Share that!
  • Share last minute gift ideas, gift suggestions.
  • Share special menus and promos or self-care/pampering for winter for the last half of the month.

If you offer any of these, check that your listing comes up when you search on the category or tag in our Business Directory. If not, then let us know which categories or tags you would like to have added to your listing, by sending an email to info@roncesvallesvillage.ca.

Digital Main Street Update

Some of our members who took advantage of the Digital Mainstreet offer last fall, were featured on Digital Mainstreet’s Instagram Stories.  We reposted it and you can watch the Tuesday Takeover on the Digital Media site or from our Instagram page highlight on our profile.

South End Construction Update

The construction dates for the south end of Roncesvalles have changed again. Work on the King/Queen/Roncesvalles/Queensway (KQRQ)intersection is now scheduled for March/April 2021 until Summer of 2022, with other work in the vicinity being undertaken in 2020.

In an effort to reduce the duration of a full intersection and impacts on streetcar services, only two TTC streetcar routes will be affected each project year  (505 Dundas and 506 Carlton in 2020, and 501 Queen and 504 King in 2021).

Our South End Reconstruction Mitigation Committee will be advocating for Member needs. If you wish to join the committee, please contact info@roncesvallesvillage.ca.

Construction Schedule Overview

2020

The City will start construction on the underside of The Queensway Bridge structure over Parkside Drive as part of the KQRQ contract. The City and TTC have scheduled track renewal work on Howard Park Avenue at Parkside Drive to begin in Spring. The work on Howard Park Avenue, east to the intersection of Sunnyside Avenue, and at the intersection of Howard Park Avenue and Dundas Street West will continue until  September. In September, the TTC and the City will reconstruct the College and Dundas Street West intersection until November.

2021

As a result of this work taking place in 2020, the construction  at KQRQ intersection work will start in March/April 2021 and will continue to Summer 2022. City staff from the Public Consultation Unit will be reaching out to stakeholders to provide more detail about the 2020 work (traffic, staging and anticipated impacts) and to continue planning discussions with BIAs affected by the 2021 work at KQRQ.

Supporting the adoption of rooftop solar in TO

Do you own a commercial or residential building?
Have you considered installing rooftop solar on your building? The City of Toronto wants to hear from you! The City is considering ways to support the adoption of rooftop solar in Toronto. Solar panels can be installed on buildings of all sizes to generate clean renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, 75% of energy we use must be renewable or low carbon. You can help to #TransformTO. Take the survey.  Explore how you can start contributing to a lower carbon Toronto at your business.

Carbon Reduction Support for Businesses

Homes and buildings generate about half of the greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto today. To reduce the worst impacts of climate change, the City of Toronto has a target to reduce GHG emissions by 80 percent by 2050. To reach the target, all existing homes and buildings in Toronto will need to be 40 per cent more energy efficient, on average, than they are today. Learn more about the City’s TransformTO Climate Action Strategy and Better Buildings Partnership support programs available to commercial buildings.

Current State & Future of Toronto’s Retail Main Streets

City of Toronto’s Draft Report

In 2018, the City of Toronto undertook a study of the current state and future of Toronto’s main streets and potential policies and programs to support small retail businesses in these areas.  Recommendations are being brought forward to Council in early 2020.

Some of the key findings include:
  1. Toronto is fortunate in having a strong foundation of independent businesses (those with fewer than 5 Toronto locations) in its retail and consumer service sector.
  2. Toronto Residents prefer to shop in local independent businesses
  3. Main Streets are key Locations for Independent Businesses
  4. They contribute to creating walkable streets and neighbourhoods
  5. They support economic development goals
  6. They support social inclusion and equity goals
  7. They support broader societal and civic engagement goals
  8. On average, 30% of people visiting retailers in the case study main streets live within 800 metres.
  9. The number of retail stores selling goods (excluding automotive) in Toronto decreased between 2011 and 2018, especially in non-food categories.
  10. The number of service establishments increased - food services by 13$ and non-food services by 5%. This is aligned with consumer behaviour research; more people are buying services that they used to perform themselves.
Read more about the goals of the study and additional key findings in the draft report.
