AUBURN UNIVERSITY, Ala. – For interested Alabama cattle producers, there are still
a few spots left in this year’s Sand Mountain Elite Heifer Development Program. The
program, now in its fifth year, develops top-quality heifer for producers to introduce them
back into existing herds.
About the Program Cattle producers often do not have the land resources available to develop their own
replacements. This program allows them to send their heifers to the Sand Mountain
Research and Extension Center to be developed and mated to proven calving-ease sires.
After six months, the heifers will be returned to the owner, safe in-calf. Consignors
should see genetic improvement and hopefully strengthen the maternal traits of their cow
herd.
Kent Stanford, an Alabama Extension animal science specialist, said this program is a
wonderful opportunity for cattle producers
“Participants will gain an understanding of proper heifer development from weaning
through breeding,” Stanford said. “Our goal is to show producers that this can be
accomplished on their own through timely, practical management.”
