Every Child Ready to Read!
Every Child Ready to Read, a nation-wide, research-based program, is composed of five simple practices that can help your child get ready for reading. Each month we'll share one fun new article or activity for each practice.

READ
I was so excited to find out that one of my favorite reading resources, Brightly, has a Youtube storytime channel. Miss Linda reads children's classics like The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Each video shows the story pictures and text, and each word is highlighted as Miss Linda reads it - helping children make the connection between the spoken and written word.

SING
Nursery rhymes are great tools for learning. They help to break down words into their smaller sounds through their rhymes and rhythms. Even though they're great, they're also usually nonsensical. Let's Play Music has a fun nursery rhyme activity that will help children connect with "Sing a Song of Six Pence."

WRITE
Parents. It's time. Time to start using.....SCISSORS! Using scissors (while sometimes scary) is an excellent way to strengthen the muscles in the hand used for writing. Happy Hooligans has some cutting practice ideas involving materials other than paper AND a great tip for teaching kids how to hold scissors the right way.

TALK
When you're talking with your child, the important thing is the amount you talk to them and the variety of words that they hear. Research shows that the number of words a child is exposed to before the age of four is related to the child's academic outcomes. Mommy Messenger has a great series of posts detailing ways ot boost language use during your daily routines. The first post is about meal times and ALL the things you can talk about to or with your child while you're cooking and eating.

PLAY
Someday I'll post something about non messy play - but today is not that day! Luckily for you though, this is an activity that you can do in the bathtub. Parenting Chaos has a quick easy recipe for bath paints that you and your littles can whip up in no time! Mix them up, create a bath tub Picasso, and wash it all down the drain!
