Valldaura Labs Welcomes Class of 2019-2020 MAEBB Students

This year, the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings is expanding the scope of focus to include a transition towards Biocities (MAEBB). The aim is to achieve an even more meaningful and robust program dedicated to ecological buildings for the built environment.

The master takes up the task of addressing these set of issues by training professionals in designing, prototyping and building ecological buildings to achieve architecture tomorrow.

MAEBB Students Explore Wood from Valldaura Forest and Photogrammetry

An intrinsic element to ecologically conscious design is the consideration of how and where construction materials are sourced from.

This year, as part of a full traceability and zero km materials initiative at Valldaura Labs, MAEBB students launched a timber sourcing and tracing effort that will progress throughout the academic year and culminate in the application of the wood for the construction of the 2020 Prototype Ecohouse.

Biocities Seminar in Valldaura Labs

This Autumn, Valldaura Labs launched a foundational seminar focused on forests and cities with the objective of bringing together experts in bio-driven territories, cities and construction to create opportunities for dialogue and synergies between these interrelated disciplines.

The seminar discussed the future of our territories and cities from new principles that emerge around the interaction between the science of forests, ecological urban development and the fight against climate change.

Natural Climbing Structure with Daria Bychkova

Barcelona is one of the world’s pioneers in urbanism and architecture. In the Autumn of 2019, Valldaura Labs became a platform for ecological design and construction by students in the Master in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities with Daria Bychkova of Bureau Chekharda from Russia.

The Barcelona municipality supported the design and construction of a natural playground in the Collserola Natural Park.

Valldaura Labs Hosts COACT Incubators

In September of 2019, Tristan Copley-Smith and co-founder Jana Brauch began a new environmental innovation project at Valldaura Labs. The objective: maximise the impact and financial stability of tech projects addressing our impending climate crises.

Building on the inspiring work of Vicente Guallart, Jonathan Minchin, Aquapioneers and others working on open source technologies from Valldaura, they are developing an incubation program called COACT.
