We send our congratulations to Sophie Gray, Parsan Zar, and Cholan Zheng for passing all pre-capstone benchmarks! All three will begin their Capstone study in Nanjing University in the coming spring semester. Sophie is a major in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES), in the Honors program, and holds a minor in Public Health. Parsan is from the College of Food, Agriculture & Natural Resources Science (CFANS), majoring in Agriculture and Food Business Management. Cholan majors in Global Studies. Both Parsan and Cholan are minors in AMES.
We take pride in the fact that the three Capstone students all began as absolute beginners to Mandarin Chinese at the U three or four years ago. Their completion of the rigorous pre-capstone language and cultural requirements while pursuing other degree plans is a testimony to their drivenness, hard work, quality instructions at the UMN Chinese program, and the unique opportunities provided by Flagship resources.
The three Capstone students plan to take direct-enrollment courses at Nanjing University on topics related to their career interests, including media and cross-cultural communication, trade and finance, and the history and contemporary politics of globalization. During the second semester of their Capstone year, they look forward to working in corresponding internship positions in Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing, or Shenzhen, such as in the transnational music industry and in the field of international commerce.
Let’s congratulate them again and wish them the best in Nanjing!

热烈祝贺领航学生高思飞，查李文和郑楚连通过了顶石之年的选拔考试！三人将于明年的春季学期在南京大学开始他们的顶石之年的学习。高思飞是明大的荣誉项目的学生，她主修亚洲和中东研究（中文方向），辅修公共卫生。查李文来自食品、农业与自然资源科学学院cong，主修农业与食品企业管理。 郑楚连的主修专业是全球研究。查李文和郑楚连的辅修专业是亚洲与中东研究 （中文方向）。
值得骄傲的是，这三名学生在三、四年前还都是零基础的中文初学者。而如今，他们在攻读其他学位课程的同时完成了领航项目严格的语言与文化要求，这充分肯定了他们的努力与勤奋，也肯定了明大高质量的汉语课程以及领航项目提供的独特机会。
三名进入顶石之年的学生计划在南京大学直接注册与其职业兴趣相关的课程。这些课程的内容包括媒体和跨文化交流，贸易与金融，以及全球化的历史和当代政治。在顶石之年的第二个学期，他们期待在南京，上海，北京或深圳的相应实习岗位工作，比如跨国音乐产业和国际贸易领域。

The newly established Taipei Capstone Center at the National Taiwan University held its Inauguration Ceremony this past October. CFS Director Ning Ma attended the event along with other Chinese Flagship directors around the nation, and visited the UMN students studying there. A report of the inauguration ceremony has appeared in Taipei Times.

In addition to Nanjing and Taipei, a domestic Capstone option will become available to Flagship students in fall 2020, at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. Their students will have access to language instruction and resources from the DLI along with the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, be placed in a Chinese-speaking living-learning community, and participate in field trips and cultural events. The domestic Capstone option is especially suitable for students wishing to pursue careers in service to the U.S. government.

美国境内的顶石项目

We are happy to welcome Logan Morrow to the CFS team as the new Chinese Flagship Program Assistant and Curriculum Coordinator for AMES, following our former Assistant Martha Mockus' promotion to the position of the AMES Department Administrator.
随着领航项目前助理莫松涛晋升为亚洲与中东研究系的部门主管，领航项目的团队又迎来了一位新成员。Logan Morrow成为了领航项目新助理和亚洲与中东研究系的课程协调员。

Originally from Colorado Springs, Logan moved to the Twin Cities two years ago and has since been working in the mental health field until his new UMN position.
Logan lived in Changsha, China, from 2013-2014 teaching oral English at Changjun Middle School. The students there gave him the endearing nickname “radish root” (luóbo gēn) since it sounds similar to his name. Logan wouldn’t mind if U of M students refer to him the same way!
Of his many responsibilities at the UMN, Logan is most excited to work with students on scholarship applications and personal essays as they progress towards their own adventures abroad. For those interested in joining the U.S. Foreign Service, feel free to contact Logan at morrowj@umn.com, as he is familiar with the application and testing process.

The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey

On the evening of Dec. 4th, 13 UMN students of Mandarin Chinese took the stage of the Best Buy Theater of Northrop to complete their end-of-semester project for “Introduction to Classical Chinese Language and Culture.” Entitled “The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey,” the play consists of various scenes that provide a modern perspective on classical forms of art and literature, all conceptualized and performed by students under the guidance of the course instructor Ning Ma, CFS Director and Associate Professor of AMES.
This performance event is funded by the Teaching Innovation Grant from the Center for Education Innovation. Many students in the show are enrolled in the Flagship program. The play was primarily performed in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles, interspersed with Portuguese, French, and Thai segments and live music performances. Its topics range from robot calligraphy to a Daoist philosophy about gender identity, showcasing the class’s border-crossing explorations. Meanwhile, the students demonstrated their advanced Chinese proficiency as they executed with confidence and dramatic flair lines filled with classical quotations.
UMN students and faculty, as well as community partners, were in the audience. The event generated new ties between students of Chinese and the local Chinese community. The UMN student band “Clay,” which consists of international students from China, opened the show with their original songs and covers of folk tunes. A news report about the show has appeared in Minnesota Times, a major Chinese newspaper in town.
In the words of Professor Ma, “What I am most proud of is how all the students rose to the occasion. This is especially thrilling to witness given how new the topics and vocabularies were to them at the beginning of the semester– as a matter of fact, many of them didn’t speak a word of Mandarin Chinese two or three years ago. Based on this outcome, I am more convinced than ever that live theater has its irreplaceable value in bringing out a student’s full potential as a language learner.”
Professor Ma further emphasized that all acts stemmed from the students’ original concepts, reflecting their unique intercultural perspectives. Beyond the classroom and language study itself, she hopes that the theater experience has staying power with the students, and creates cross-cultural connections in whole new ways.

无问西东：中国古典文化的跨时空之旅
12月4日晚，13名在明大学习中文的学生登上了Northrop 的Best Buy 剧院的舞台，完成了本学期“中国古典语言与文化概论”的结业作品。此次演出的主题为“无问西东：中国古典文化的跨时空之旅”，这场演出由各种情景短剧组成，并从现代视角对古典艺术和文学形式进行解读。 该演出的所有剧目都是在课程指导老师马宁女士（亚洲与中东研究系副教授兼中文领航主任）的指导下由学生构思和表演的。
这次演出活动由教育创新中心的 教学创新基金赞助。参演的许多学生都参加了领航项目。该剧在使用中文进行表演的同时也向观众提供英文字幕，并在其间穿插了葡萄牙语，法语和泰语片段以及现场音乐表演。其内容涵盖从机器人书法到以道家哲学对性别身份进行解读的不同主题，展现了学生们的跨界探索能力。同时，通过他们信心十足的表演和充满经典语录的台词，学生们显示了他们高级的汉语水平。
当晚到场的观众包括明大的学生、明大教职员工以及社区的合作伙伴。该活动在中文学生与当地华人社区之间建立了新的联系。 由中国留学生组成的乐队“ Clay” 用他们的原创歌曲和传统民歌翻唱作为本次表演的开场。《明州时报》已刊登了关于此次演出的报道。
马教授说：“最让我引以为豪的是学生们在演出中的优秀表现。在学期开始时，这些话题和词汇对他们来说还是十分陌生。如今他们的表现真是来之不易! 事实上，很多同学在两三年前一句中文都不会讲。看到这种成果，我比以往任何时候都更加相信，舞台表演在发挥学生作为语言学习者的全部潜力方面具有不可替代的价值。”
马教授进一步强调，所有表演都源于学生的创意，反映他们独特的跨文化视角。除了课堂和语言学习本身，她希望舞台表演的经历能对学生具有持久的影响力，并以全新的方式建立跨文化的联系。

Chinese Calligraphy at the U
|
This fall semester, AMES Teaching Specialist Hong Zhang is once again offering his Chinese calligraphy course, giving students the opportunity to learn more about the mechanics of writing Chinese characters, along with the extensive literary and cultural significance associated with the art of calligraphy.
本秋季学期，亚洲与中东研究系的张宏老师再次教授他的中国书法课程，使学生们有机会学习更多关于汉字书写的技巧，以及与书法艺术相关的广泛的文学和文化意义。

Hong Zhang studied under the late master artist Shen Shijia for Chinese calligraphy and painting and continued his studies at the Shanghai Fine Arts Institute. He has over 20 years of experience teaching Chinese calligraphy, painting, and language at the college level and in a variety of formats, including Community Adult Learning Seminars and Art and Language Workshops. His favorite part is always seeing students make great progress from how to hold a brush to creating their own works of calligraphy. According to him, the value of studying Chinese calligraphy lies not only in learning how to write characters, but in building analytical and observational skills, as well as helping students to develop a sense of balance.
Interested students who have previously studied calligraphy will have the opportunity to take an advanced Chinese handwriting course with instructor Zhang this coming spring.

明大的中国书法课
张宏曾师从已故艺术大师申石伽，学习中国书画，并在上海美术学院继续深造。他有超过20年的中国书法，绘画和语言的大学教学经验。他也曾在社区成人学习研讨会和艺术与语言研讨会上教授书法。在教学中，他最喜欢看到学生们从学习握笔到创作自己的书法作品之间的点点滴滴的进步。他认为，学习中国书法的价值不仅在于学习写字，也在于建立分析和观察技能，以及帮助学生发展平衡感。
曾经学习过书法并感兴趣的学生有机会在这个春季与张老师一起学习高级汉语书写课程。

CLIC: Culture and Language Integration in Chinese
|
In 2017, parents of students who had recently graduated from eight-year Chinese immersion programs approached the University of Minnesota with a problem: these students were unable to find a high-school Chinese class suited to their proficiency. At the same time, the CLA Language Center noticed that there were many Chinese international students seeking language partners through the TandemPlus program. To solve both issues at once, the CLIC (Culture and Language Integration in Chinese) Program came into place, through a collaboration of the Chinese Flagship, the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and the Language Center.
Led by the instructor of the program, Dr. Zhen Zou, CLIC hosts bilingual conversation sessions every week for local high-school students and UMN international students. So far, more than 200 students have participated, gaining valuable language practice along with new cross-cultural connections.

CLIC: 中英双语文化交换项目
2017年，刚从八年中文沉浸式课程毕业的学生家长向明尼苏达大学提出了一个问题：这些学生无法找到适合自己水平的高中中文课程。与此同时，明大也注意到许多中国留学生在通过TandemPlus项目寻求语言学习伙伴。为了同时解决这两个问题，中文领航项目、亚洲与中东研究系以及语言中心进行合作，建立了CLIC中英双语文化交换项目。
CLIC项目的负责老师是邹溱博士。该项目每周为本地高中生和明大国际学生举办双语对话活动。到目前为止，已有200多名学生参加，他们不仅获得了宝贵的语言练习机会，还建立了新的跨文化联系。

Bradford Olson: From Beijing to NYC Firms
|
Now at Columbia Law School, CFS alumnus Bradford Olson’s Capstone internship at a Beijing law firm and experiences with the Flagship Program became a central topic as he interviewed for positions at law firms. He hopes to continue working with American companies as they navigate Chinese deals when starting his new NYC position next fall.
明大领航项目校友奥乐福目前就读于哥伦比亚大学法学院。奥乐福表示，顶石之年在北京律师事务所的实习经历成为了他今年面试律师事务所职位时的中心话题。他希望在明年秋天担任纽约市新职务时能继续与美国公司合作，共同处理与中国的交易事宜。

Bradford Olson joined the Chinese Flagship Program in 2014, not long after the establishment of the Chinese Flagship program at University of Minnesota. As a member of the Flagship Program, Bradford enjoyed study abroad experiences in Beijing and Taipei before embarking on his Capstone Year. During this time, Bradford spent a semester at Nanjing University and then completed an internship at the Beijing office of the prestigious Yingke Law Firm.
His experience working in a top Chinese law firm was an important factor in kickstarting Bradford’s legal world endeavors. After graduating in the spring of 2017 summa cum laude with degrees in mathematics, music, and Asian studies, Bradford enrolled at Columbia Law School. According to him, his experiences at Yingke and with the Flagship Program later became a central topic as he began interviewing for positions at law firms. As a result, this past summer Bradford had the opportunity to work at legal offices in Minneapolis, New York, and Hong Kong. Next fall, he will start at the New York office of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where he hopes to continue working with American companies as they navigate Chinese deals.
