Dear Creative Community,

As 2019 winds down, the NFVCC is gearing up for an action packed 2020/2021!

We are thrilled to announce that we wrote a successful application to Colorado Humanities to bring The Smithsonian Institution's "Museum On Main Street" traveling exhibition to Paonia Creative District in January - February 2021. Yes, we know it's a year out, but we've got a lot planned in 2020 to complement this esteemed exhibit!

The theme of the Smithsonian's traveling exhibition is "Change in Rural America." North Fork Valley Creative Coalition has partnered with North Fork Historical Society and Blue Sage Center for the Arts to develop quality programming around "change in rural North Fork Valley" - including:
  • a Playback Theatre residency with CU Boulder in January 2020;
  • a new mural by local artist(s) in Paonia Creative District in Summer 2020;
  • Blue Sage's Story Fest in June 2020;
  • a traveling living room to encourage story sharing that will be at many events in the North Fork Valley throughout 2020;
  • a community potluck "One Town, One Table" on Grand Avenue in August 2020;
  • Blue Sage's Paint Paonia in September 2020;
  • a companion exhibition of local artists works in January to February 2021;
  • and more!
We want to hear from you! We want you to start thinking about the art you can create around this theme "change in Rural America." We will be asking you to participate all year long in authentic and creative ways to tell your story as it relates to your experience in Rural America.

Our first gatherings in 2020 will be held on January 8th-11th at KVNF Community Room, Paonia Bowie Museum, and Blue Sage Center for the Arts. We will be working with CU Boulder's Graduate Department of Theatre & Dance on a Playback Theatre residency. Read more below to learn about Playback Theatre and specific ways you can participate in the process.

We're looking forward to a creatively impactful year ahead!
Happy Holidays to one and all!

Sincerely,

Susie Lowe, Executive Director

What is Playback Theatre?
Playback is a non-scripted, interactive theatre form in which audience members share true stories or experiences from their lives and see them “played back” by an ensemble of actors in ways that build and strengthen relationships.

How does it work?
Like a cross between a town hall meeting and an improvisational performance, one actor from the ensemble (“the conductor”) engages the audience in a collective conversation, asking questions that address the specific concerns of those who’ve gathered. The audience’s responses are played back on the spot in non-confrontational ways that build bridges, strengthen social bonds, and lift civic spirit.

SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION MUSEUM ON MAIN STREET

CROSSROADS: CHANGE IN
RURAL AMERICA
January to February 2021
Paonia Creative District
We are bringing the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street to Paonia in 2021!

Since 1994, Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibitions from the Smithsonian have been designed specifically for use in small museum settings and in rural communities.

Covering topics of broad national interest such as sports, food traditions, work history, among other themes, Museum on Main Street exhibitions are between 500 and 800 square feet in size, free-standing and include objects in cases, interactive components, and audio and video presentations. Supporting materials include marketing tools, lesson plans, and training manuals.

Museum on Main Street exhibitions are designed to be a spring board for local exhibitions and complementary humanities programming. Often, the visitor count to our exhibitions exceeds the population of the towns where they are on display.

Many Americans assume that rural communities are endangered and hanging on by a thread—suffering from outmigration, ailing schools, and overused land. But that perception is far from true in many areas. Many rural Americans work hard to sustain their communities. Why should revitalizing the rural places left behind matter to those who remain, those who left, and those who will come in the future? All Americans benefit from rural America's successes. We can learn great things from listening to those stories. There is much more to the story of rural America!

Crossroads: Change in Rural America offers small towns a chance to look at their own paths to highlight the changes that affected their fortunes over the past century. The exhibition will prompt discussions about what happened when America’s rural population became a minority of the country’s population and the ripple effects that occurred. Read More
