2019 Pittsburgh Reception

The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce held its annual December Public Officials Reception last week to recognize the public and private sector leaders that are contributing to our region's economy and quality of life. More than 250 people attended the reception, which was held at the Duquesne Club in downtown Pittsburgh.

The progress made in 2019 would not be possible without the hard work and collaborative spirit of our many committed public and private sector partners.

Our Region’s Business Episode on Criminal Justice Reform

Holly Harris, Executive Director of the Justice Action Network, Manchester Bidwell CEO Kevin Jenkins, and our President Matt Smith joined Bill Flanagan on Our Region’s Business to discuss the work that the Chamber has done on criminal justice reform and what that means for local businesses.
And --- continuing to share the importance of criminal justice reform and why the business community supports such bi-partisan legislation, Matt Smith participated in a Coalition for Public Safety discussion with elected leaders in New Mexico.

Port Authority Briefing in Harrisburg

In November, Jenn Beer, VP of Government Relations, attended a transportation briefing in Harrisburg with Allegheny County House and Senate members.  The meeting, hosted by Katharine Kelleman of the Port Authority, was to discuss the state of the agency as well as state transit and transportation issues on the horizon. We look forward to supporting continued investment in our public transit assets.

Inaugural 2019 Moe Coleman Awardees

Matt Smith serves on the Moe Coleman Award selection committee and we are happy to be a sponsor of this important award. The 2019 recipients are Butler County Commissioners Leslie Osche, Kim Geyer - both republicans - and their democratic counterpart Kevin Boozel, along with Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald for their important bi-partisan work.

The award named after Morton “Moe” Coleman, founder of the University of Pittsburgh Institute of Politics, honors elected officials who work across political lines. We are deeply appreciative to these public officials for their efforts to build bridges.

2019 First Friday Wrap-Up

Our Final First Friday of 2019 sponsored by Peoples Gas featured a panel discussion with regional leaders who are shaping the future of Southwestern Pennsylvania – State Senator Lindsey Williams, Wilkinsburg Mayor Marita Garrett, and State Representative Tim O’Neal. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with these leaders.

In addition to December’s discussion, in 2019, we were joined by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, PA Secretary of the Budget Jen Swails, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, PA House Majority Leader Bryan Cutler, U.S. Congressman Conor Lamb, Port Authority of Allegheny County CEO Katharine Kelleman, PA Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa, and Executive Director of the Justice Action Network Holly Harris.

We thank all of our speakers for their time and partnership on the issues that impact all residents in southwestern Pennsylvania.

We would like to thank our sponsors of our 2019 First Friday series, presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in the Spring and Peoples Gas in the Fall. These important discussions brought together the region's private sector and public affairs community to engage with elected and other public officials on issues that are important to the region's economy and quality of life.
