As part of its Slow Tech programming, Studio XX presents Les courants, a digital arts initiation program for young people and families in Rivière-des-Prairies.

Since September 2019, thirty-five students from Jean-Grou School have been developing an artistic project with the artist Katherine Melançon. They have explored Rivière-des-Prairies to collect and digitize specimens of nature and are learning to use different technical and digital tools to generate photographs, 2D and 3D images and digital prints.

They will present the results of their work as part of an exhibition. Join the Studio XX team for the opening! Our office will be closed for the day.

In parallel with her educational activities with students from Jean-Grou School, the artist Katherine Melançon has developed a personal exhibition project. Katherine Melançon’s photographic and installation practice focuses on the representation of flora. Through various simple manipulations, welcoming accidents generated by the machine, algorithms, nature, weather and chemical principles, she questions the limits of matter, creating works between abstraction and figuration, micro and macro, nature and technology.

This workshop aims to introduce the participants to a creative and critical process in 3 steps: creation of 360 video sequences; integration of the 360 ​​sequences into a virtual reality (VR) environment; and setting an immersive installation in space, either with video or VR, or by combining both. 

Participants will:
– Discover a variety of artistic practices in video and VR installation, and technocritical multimedia artworks;
– Explore the use of 360 video for VR in order to create a hybrid and experimental presentation;
– Develop a new project or adapt elements of an existing project integrating these new techniques;
– Present a project to the group

For more than twenty years, Studio XX has been producing HTMlles, a feminist festival of media arts and digital culture. The festival has established itself as a socially-engaged space, addressing an urgent current issue with each edition. Every two years, HTMlles mobilizes local, national and international artists, theorists, and activists working at the intersection of art and technology, and unfolds in artist-run centres, cultural spaces, and university research laboratories throughout Montreal.
