GROWING LEADERS BLOG

How God Remembers You

by Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

It started with an early morning phone call from a relative of a church member. Their connection with the church was almost non-existent, but in a time of crisis they needed a pastor to come. Their father was in the nursing home and he was dying. Would I please come and sit with the family? I dressed quickly and headed to the nursing facility where the man was on his death bed.

When I asked the family about their memories of their father, their response was unexpected. Their memories were far from how God remembers us.

An Extra Special Christmas Program

"Every person, skill and passion is stamped valuable in this most beautiful of pageants."

We couldn't say it any better! Community Mom Desiree writes about her family's experience at the special needs children's Christmas program in her personal blog. Grab a tissue!

This is what Christmas is all about!

A Memorable Journey

Auburn Adventist Academy Church and its ministry partners presented the 13th production in 14 years of Journey to Bethlehem outdoor dramatic nativity. Over four nights, 5,858 guests journeyed back in time through creative storytelling to discover that even in the messes of life, God is still working and doesn't give up on us. Event organizers estimate that two-thirds of the audience represented the local community who look forward to this annual tradition.

Included in the guests: a representative from the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce who blogged about her experience!

Investing in Community
Several of our office staff were in the J2B production as cast and crew:
  • Michelle Wachter, Bill Roberts (+ Dorena as cast care), Caleb & Christine Maccarone, and Jodi & Willie Iwankiw (guides)
  • Meriah Siahaan (manger guitarist)
  • Joyce Moore's twin grandbabies (Baby Jesus)
  • Jerry & Sharon Russell, Craig & Carissa Carr and David & Nitza Salazar (welcome back greeters)
  • Heidi & Jonathan Baumgartner (media)
  • Doug & Wilma Bing (gopher for the executive director and the executive director, respectively).
We all had a fabulous time investing in community building with our families!

Revisiting the Blue Zones

More than 14 years have passed since Dan Buettner first wrote about the world’s longest-lived people for National Geographic.

Today he’s still uncovering the secrets of centenarians in regions he calls the blue zones. He recently returned to four of them to learn more about the foods that contribute to this remarkable longevity, collecting time-tested recipes and investigating why certain foods seem to promote long lives.

One of the four zones: Loma Linda, California!
