Worldly Nonprofit Spotlight

\

International Arts in Healthcare is a nonprofit based in Aspen, Colorado. Their mission is to help the mentally ill and disabled survivors and teach caregivers how to offer comforting healing in the form of the expressive arts.
They also offer sustainable expressive arts therapy training for staff working in refugee camps and other remote areas in Kenya.

Abandoned by governments, forgotten by the aid community, neglected and abused by entire societies, Africans with mental illness in regions in crisis are resigned to the dark corners of churches, chained to rusted hospital beds, locked away to live behind the bars of filthy prisons.

Some have suffered trauma leading to illness. Others were born with mental disabilities. In countries where infrastructure has collapsed and mental health professionals have fled, treatment is often the same – a life in chains.
International Arts in Healthcare partners with organizations to organize art based trauma intervention programs to address mental health care issues in a culturally appropriate way.
