Principal Message - End of Semester Update

Dear Abernethy Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are a few days away from our Winter Break and the joy/fun of the holiday season. It has been a very productive first semester in my role as your new principal. I am so thankful each day for our wonderful, veteran teaching team and our outstanding families.

This semester I have worked closely with the Instructional Leadership Team, teachers, and our Instructional Coach to evaluate our school systems with an appreciative approach. We are always looking for what is working well for all our students and as reflective educators asking how can we improve together? We used our professional development time to focus on instructional needs as well as enhancing our PBIS approach.
In addition, in August and September we focused on a deeper understanding of the 5 Essential Components of the Most Effective Schools. They are the following:
  1. Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum, Aligned to Common Core State Standards
  2. Common Understanding and Application of Effective Instruction using Gradual Release of Responsibility (I do, We do, and then You do)
  3. Comprehensive Assessment System
  4. Effective Tiered Systems of Support for Instruction and Behavior
  5. Effective Data Teaming through the Professional Learning Community (PLC) model
In October/November, we worked with our Instructional Coach to align our instructional goals in Reading and Math to have a K-5 articulation of teaching and learning with a focus on our shared vision that all students at Abernethy will be well prepared for their next learning experience and on track to graduate high school with all college and career doors open to them.

It continues to be a time of complex change that we are managing through together. We have a shared vision, strong skills in teaching and student engagement, the incentive to see all our student grow and learn, adequate resources at this time, and are continuing to develop our action plan or our school improvement plan.
In January, thankfully we launch our Teachers Support Teachers work with Beaverton reading teachers hosted by our PTO Partnership and parent, Jen Burkart. It is a chance for our teachers to visit Beaverton teachers to observe their implementation of the Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing in order to develop routines, lessons, and implement the new Unit of Study Phonics materials that we purchased this fall. Beaverton is several years ahead in this approach. The chance to visit is so important and the timing is perfect. Once teaches observe, then the mentor teachers will be coming to visit Abernethy to host planning sessions and to model teaching of particular lessons. I must say how much I admire the willingness of our faculty to never stop learning. Huge ATTA WAY to Jen, Hanna, and others in the PTO for setting this program up and for your support!

We know that our collective work will lead to lasting change where one day other PPS teachers will come to see our classrooms as a model of excellence in teaching and learning. It is truly an exciting time and cannot say thank you enough to all the parents, families, and community members who have invested in the PTO programs. I truly see a difference each day in the lives of the teachers, staff, and students. Our strong parent relationships and partnerships are key to our success.

I hope your upcoming break is a time of rest, joyful connections, and warm celebrations. It promises to be a wonderful New Year filled with more opportunities to continue to grow our students to the best of our ability under these dearly loved elms.

Warmly,

Dr. Christie M. Petersen

Help Needed During the Holidays

Abernethy Elementary is an extremely caring school, and we know that the health and happiness of each child here contributes to the health and happiness of the entire community.  We have several families that are needing support this year for the extended break and holidays and would like to open it up to the community to help provide this support.  Contributions that  would be helpful are in the form of: gift cards Fred Meyer or Target or warm winter clothing.  If you are interested in assisting with winter clothing items, please contact Jenny Morgan for more information about this.  All contributions can be brought to Jenny in room 5A or put in her box in the office. If you are a family in need of assistance this year, please call Jenny Morgan at 503-916-6190

Thank you for your care and concern for our school community.

Lost & Found is getting cleared out

Welcome to the December Edition of the Abernethy School Lost & Found Digest. Is your child missing a sweatshirt, sweater or winter coat? Chances are it’s in the Lost and Found. We will be bagging them up on December 18th at 3pm to be picked up for the PPS Clothing Closet on Thursday, December 19th in the morning. This is slightly early than the typical "last school Friday of the month” because of the pick up schedule before winter break. It is ALWAYS a good idea to check the lost and found when at the school.  Additionally, please remember to label everything with your child’s first and last name. If it is labeled, we will attempt to get it back to your child’s classroom.
