What a year!
2019 has been a steady year for Te Mātāwai as we seek to support the revitalisation of te reo Māori amongst our communities. We have continued to progress projects within our three core areas of operation; investments (Te Mātāuru), research (Te Mātātupu) and leadership (Te Matatū) across the Te Reo Māori sector.

Te Mātāuru
I te tau ka hori e $7,889,933 i haumitia ki a ngāi Māori mō te whakarauora i tō tātou reo. I pukumahi ō mātou Pae Motuhake, arā, ngā toa reo, ngā kaitaunaki reo, te hunga kohara ki te reo o tēnā, o tēnā hapori, e taea ai, e tautokona ai ō tātou whānau, hapū, iwi, ki te whai i ō rātou ara ki te reo.
Mai i Te Pae Motuhake o Te Tai Rāwhiti i haumi i te Hui Reo o Te Reo ki Tua, ki Ngā Pae Manu o Tainui i haumi i te Kura Reo o Ngāti Hauā – ētahi o ngā kaupapa i haumitia e mātou i hopu nei i te ngākau me te hinengaro o ō tātou iwi.

Te Mātāuru
In the past year we invested $7,889,933 into the revitalisation of our language through our people. Our Pae Motuhake, who are reo champions, reo advocates and reo enthusiasts in each of our communities, worked hard throughout the year to make sure the reo journeys our whānau, hapū and iwi were enabled and supported.
From Te Pae Motuhake o Te Tai Rāwhiti investing in the Te Reo ki Tua Language Symposium, to Ngā Pae Manu o Tainui investing in the Ngāti Haua Kura Reo – the kaupapa we invested in captured the hearts and minds of our people.

I whakamahia e te mahi rangahau nei te kaupapa Māori kia noho mārama ai ki ngā take e āwhina ana, e ārai ana i te hunga ako i a rātou ka akoako, ka whakamahi i te reo Māori.

Te Mātātupu
Our research team has been working hard to increase the store of data and information available to underpin our strategies and investment plans.
This has seen us set up a three-year Strategic Research Agenda and we have been commissioning research projects that will support effective investment to support the reo revitalisation aspirations of whānau, iwi and communities.
Our research is based on four key principles: Mana Māori; Mana Tangata; Mana Motuhake; and Mana Tiaki.
This year also saw the completion of several projects including– the Annual Kaitono Survey, which was created to improve the internal Te Mātāwai investment funding process, and the Manawa ū ki te reo Māori: motivations and barriers to Māori language acquisition and use project. This research used a kaupapa Māori approach to understand the factors that help and hinder learners as they learn and use te reo Māori.

Te Matatū

I tēnei tau i haere kōtui a Te Mātāwai ki ētahi whakahaere maha tonu o roto i Te Whare o Te Reo Mauriora, te kōtuinga i waenga i a ngāi Māori me te Karauna mō te whakarauoratanga o te reo Māori - tae atu ki Te Matatini ki te Ao, me Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori ki te tautoko i Nga Tohu Reo Māori 2019.
Te Matatini
Pārekareka ana te tīmatanga o te tau 2019 mō Te Mātāwai i ngā whakataetae a Te Matatini o ia rua tau i tū ki Te Whanganui-a-Tara. I whai wāhi atu mātou ki te whakanui i te reo me te haka i Te Matatini ki te Ao i te Huitanguru. I hīkoi haere mātou ki waenga i te hapori ki te kōrero ki te tangata mō ō rātou moemoeā, ō rātou wawata mō te whakarauora i te reo Māori ki tua. Ora ana te ngākau i te tūnga tuatahi ki te taha o Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori i raro i te maru o Te Whare o te Reo Mauri Ora.

Te Matatū
One of the other key functions of Te Mātāwai is Te Matatū - where we provide strategic leadership and monitor the progress of Māori language revitalisation. This year has seen Te Mātāwai partnering with several organisations within Te Whare o Te Reo Mauriora, the partnership between Māori and the Crown for the revitalisation of te reo Māori - including Te Matatini ki te Ao, and Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori to support Nga Tohu Reo Māori 2019.
Te Matatini
We kicked off 2019 with a bang for Te Mātāwai at the biannual Te Matatini competition in Te Whanganui a Tara. We shared in the celebrations of reo and haka at Te Matatini ki te Ao in February. We were able to get out amongst the community and talk with people about their dreams and aspirations for the future of te reo Māori revitalisation. It was heartening to stand alongside Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori under the banner of Te Whare o te Reo Mauri Ora for the first time.

This year saw some great reo Māori initiatives happening across the country. Te Mātāwai teamed up with Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori again to help support the reo Māori parades in Pōneke and Tāmaki Makaurau. We also partnered with Māori Television to broadcast a special te reo Māori debate show ‘Reo Tautohe – Ngutu Koikoi’ – which was a simultaneous broadcast online and on the Reo channel.

To finish off the year, Te Mātāwai celebrated the 2019 UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages, with a National Hui bringing together Aotearoa’s te reo Māori champions alongside hundreds of rangatahi to strategise the revitalisation of te reo Māori.
The events, were brought together under the auspices of Te Whare o te Reo Mauriora - the partnership between whānau, iwi and Māori communities, represented by Te Mātāwai and the Crown respectively, heralds a new way of working together to support the revitalisation of the language throughout Aotearoa.
Not only were several of the kaupapa we invested in recognised at the annual Ngā Tohu Reo Awards, but our Co-Chairman, Waihoroi Shortland was honoured to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award alongside his wife, Rahera Shortland at the ceremony in Auckland.

That’s a wrap!
The Te Mātāwai office will be closed over the Christmas/New Year period from 23 December 2019 re-opening on Monday 6 January 2020.
We are proud to be taking a leadership role in uplifting the Māori language across Aotearoa and creating opportunities for te reo Māori to be spoken, heard, understood and loved, no matter where a person is in their reo Māori journey. We look forward to continuing this mahi with all you in 2020.
