Tin Drum Holiday Show

Meet Tin Drum, an ensemble of musicians bringing an invigorating freshness to contemporary music by exploring themes that fall outside of well-worn trends. The band’s nucleus is the husband-wife team of BURLEIGH DRUMMOND and MARY HARRIS. They are two veterans who continue to thrive with their current project as strong, experienced singing and song writing partners. Drummond was the founding drummer of progressive pop-rock group Ambrosia, a band that helped define the sound of popular music in the 1970s and 80s with a string of hits and five subsequent Grammy nominations. Drummond wears many musical hats now, playing drums, percussion, and acoustic guitar as well as providing vocals. Harris is a singer/songwriter who has honed her skills on the road and in the studio, working with the top acts of Pink Floyd, XTC, Stanley Clarke, and Jimmy Buffet. Now she provides the voice of Tin Drum and plays keyboard in the band. Enhancing the ensemble are JOHN DAVIS on bass/vocals and MARC BONILLA on guitar, mandolin, and vocals, musicians who embrace and help to further define Tin Drum’s musical philosophy.
This Southern California based band has released three CDs: Real World (1995), Small Parade (2001) and Where Have You Been? (2009). Each Album captures the musical passions of the group with their intimate and personal style. A deeper exploration reveals rich, complex arrangements and a mature look at the world that is revealed through lyrics that reflect both the ethereal content of dreams and the concrete issues of everyday living. Holiday Recital & Reception

Featuring VOPA alumni and rising stars, Christina Kushnick and Julia Timmons. Julia is completing her second year of undergraduate school in the highly competitive opera program at Carnegie Melon University. in Philadelphia, and Christina is finishing up her graduate degree at Manhattan School of Music, where she has had the honor of being selected to perform in numerous prestigious events, including making her debut at Carnegie Hall in an event hosted by actor Alec Baldwin.
Christina and Julia will be joining VOPA Broadway favorite, Katie McTyre, and VOPA General Director, Shira Renee Thomas, and Artistic Director, Dylan F. Thomas, performing opera, musical theater, jazz standards, and holiday music. Pianist Hannah Yi and bassist Jay Rubottom will round out this A-list group of artists.

We DJ and teach a wide variety of Country Line Dances and Country Partner Dances in the Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley areas. Depending on the class, we teach 1 - 3 country dances an hour to really concentrate on the dance(s), so that all can learn it well. New moves are added to partner dances, after everyone gets the basics down. Private lessons for individuals, couples or groups are also available.

The Goebel Adult Community Center will be hosting their Saturday Ballroom Dances in December on December 7 and December 21. Doors open at 6:00pm. Free dance lessons are from 6:30-7:20pm. The dance is from 7:30-10:00pm. Dick Parent Trio will be playing on December 7 and Eric Ekstrand Trio will be playing on December 21 (Holiday Theme). Candace Garcia-Skor of A Caring Solution will be sponsoring the December 7 dance and Lourdes Simons of Regal Medical Group will be sponsoring the December 21 dance.

Stronger Together Unity Shabbat

This past Shabbat, December 14, our Synagogue and facility were vandalized.
We are deeply thankful for the out pour of solidarity, support and good wishes we have been receiving.
This Thursday, December 19, we will be fasting and saying Tehillim at 3:00 pm followed by Mincha and Arvit from 4:00 pm. Fast starts at 5:34 am and ends 5:10 pm.
To stand strong and united in solidarity, we will be having joint services this Shabbat, December 21, in Shofet Hall at 9:00 AM.

We have reached the final month of 2019! Aaaaaaaaand if you are trying to figure out a fun place to spend December, then the Goebel Adult Community Center is the place for you!
Registration for CRPD Winter classes begin on January 3 and classes will begin the week of January 20, so make sure to call or register online for your favorite classes before they fill up! (See pages 2 and 3 for a list of CRPD Winter classes). The Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise will be hosting their Free Annual Holiday Breakfast at the Goebel Center which will be held on Friday, December 13 at 7:00am. Reservations are required so call for your spot before it’s too late!. Jason Love will be here performing a Comedy Comes Alive show on Sunday, January 26 at 3:00pm. Tickets are on sale NOW at the front desk. Holiday Friday Night Bingo will be coming to Goebel Center on December 20. Free dinner will be included with every minimum buy-in. Speaking of Friday Night Bingo, check out the inside cover for the 2020 Friday Night Bingo dates and mark your calendars. SAVE THE DATE for the 2020 CSVP Wellness Fest coming to the Goebel Center on Wednesday, January 15 at 9:00am. This year’s theme will be “Peace, Love, and Wellness. LA Church to Serve Free Holiday Meals to People in Need
December 22
The Congregational Church of Chatsworth will serve free holiday meals to people in need the Sunday before Christmas. The church will serve delicious food to the poor, the homeless, the unemployed, and others on Sunday, December 22, at 11 a.m. “We want to help people who are often forgotten,” says Rev. Bill Freeman. He adds, “The temperature can be cold at this time of the year and this is our effort to give people a warm meal served by caring hands at Christmastime.”
The meals will follow the church’s 10 a.m. Sunday service, but people do not have to attend church to receive a free holiday meal at 11. The church also operates a Food Pantry for people in need, which is open Saturdays, 3-5 p.m. The Congregational Church of Chatsworth, a United Church of Christ church in Northwest Los Angeles, conducts Sunday services at 20440 Lassen Street in Chatsworth.

The Burbank-Valley Garden Club meets, Thursday, JANUARY 2, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., at the Little White Chapel, 1711 N. Avon St., Burbank.
Starting from Seeds is the program our speaker, Robin Gemmill will be presenting at our January meeting. Ms. Gemmill is a retired Advance Practice Nurse who has a passion for gardening, nutrition and health. She earned her Master Gardener designation at the University of California Co-operative Extension, Los Angeles (CCCE). She provides classes on composting, integrative pest management, container gardening and urban agriculture for the community and community gardens. She is also a Master Food Preserver through Slow Food Los Angeles practicing canning, food dehydration and fermentation for health.
Her presentation for the Burbank-Valley Garden Club will cover environmental factors for successful germination, soil conditions that influence growing success and strategies for successful seed germination of direct planting and transplanting.

LA Opera Talk
January 14
The Friends of Platt Library will be hosting an LA Opera talk on Tuesday January 14th, 2020 at 6:15 PM. Kevin Bratton, a representative of the opera company, will be discussing the company’s premier production of “Eurydice”, a new opera composed by Matthew Aucoin with a libretto by Sarah Ruhl.
In the Greek myth Eurydice is a shadowy figure we hardly know. This new opera reimagines the ancient myth for modern times and the tale is told from the point of view of the heroine. Tragically killed on her wedding day, the young bride descends to the underworld where she is reunited with her adoring father. Presented with the opportunity to return to her husband she must choose between the two men she loves.
The event will be held at the Los Angeles Public Library, Platt Branch, 23600 Victory Boulevard in Woodland Hills. Admission is free and no reservations are required.

Senior Companion Program

The Senior Companion Program recruits active, fixed income seniors to assist other seniors in their homes.
The goals of the program are two-fold:
(1) to help seniors live as independently as possible.
(2) to provide fixed income seniors with a meaningful service opportunity and a modest source of income.
Senior Companion volunteers assist with activities of daily living such as shopping, preparing meals, running errands, and providing companionship to alleviate the loneliness that so many homebound seniors experience.

“Transforming Your Relationship With Food”
Senior Concerns, as part of its commitment to provide support for seniors, will present a community seminar titled “Transforming Your Relationship With Food,” on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, 4:00-5:30 p.m. at Senior Concerns, 401 Hodencamp Road, Thousand Oaks.
This informative seminar, led by Eileen Gold, owner/administrator of Paraclete Eldercare Planning, Training, Consultation and Management Services, will explore the causes and remedies for our dysfunctional relationship with food, and help attendees learn what foods support metabolism and what foods do not. Seminar attendees will also be introduced to the habits of people who live the longest, happiest and healthiest lives in the world, and gain new insights, attitudes and strategies to change your relationship with food.
Eileen Gold, M.A. is a graduate of UCLA with her Masters in philosophy. Eileen serves as a consultant to residential, day activity and governmental programs serving individuals with impairments. She has extensive experience in administration, program development, case management, community organization and advocacy. Eileen is a frequent guest speaker at forums addressing the issues impacting the lives of older adults.
