The Four Pillars of Mentoring - Part 2

What supports a mentored cohort structure?

As NXTGEN is committed to pastoral health is found in mentored cohorts, I will be sharing some of the important mentoring concepts. Whether you work directly with pastors or not, these approaches are valuable in many of our relationships.

Communication
  • How to build
    • Be present and attentive to your mentee
    • Be timely with your questions, thoughts, and opinions
    • Use non-verbal signals to invite dialogue and demonstrate that you are listening and understand (e.g., sitting forward, eye contact, nodding head)
    • Provide thoughtful responses to your mentee’s questions - avoid “yes/no” responses that close the door
  • Actions
    • Prepare for one-on-one meetings
    • Apply active listening skills:
      • Repeat back (paraphrase) what you heard
      • Ask follow-up questions
      • Ask for clarification/confirmation
      • Share your point of view
    • Empathize with your mentor/mentee
      • Listen to understand versus protecting your position/opinion
      • Express appreciation for cohort
Courage
  • How to build
    • Encourage the mentee to ask clarifying questions to understand your advice, suggestions, etc.
    • Give permission to the mentee to provide feedback.
    • Provide specific, actionable feedback to your mentee
  • Actions
    • When faced with tough issues or challenges, ask yourself the following questions to ensure you face situations with courage
      • “What could be a great outcome?”
      • “What results do I hope to achieve?”
      • “What is likely to happen if I do not address this issue?”
      • “What makes this a difficult issue for me to address?”
      • “Is the value of change greater than the pain to remain the same?”
In conclusion...
These second two pillars, along with truth and confidentiality, will provide stability for the mentoring structure allowing it to grow and develop.

The Four Pillars of Mentoring is adapted from Qualcomm's Mentorship Program.
