The FCCLA chapter of Basehor-Linwood High School hosted over 80 community members and 19 vendors at the first FCCLA Holiday mart Saturday, December 14th. Vendors ranging from Scentsy, T-Shirts, to Mary Kay, and lots of handmade craft vendors were all in attendance.

Santa (Mr. Noel Hull) made an appearance and took pictures with people of all ages! The 50/50 pot winner, Ran Marquardt won $14. FCCLA made over $750 to help send members to the State competition in Wichita this April.

FCCLA members also provided a free daycare service that five children used. While at the daycare the children created crafts, played board games, and watched movies. Feedback from the parents was all positive. These members are now planning another free daycare opportunity for the teachers during parent/teacher conferences in February.

FCCLA members intend to host another Holiday Mart next December. They plan on putting more effort into marketing the event to the community to encourage more people to come next year.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national career and technical student organization (CTSO) that gives students opportunities to learn leadership skills, grow personally, and prepare for future college and career. FCCLA has over 165,000 members nationwide and is the ONLY CTSO with the family as the central focus.

January is School Board Recognition Month, a great opportunity to say thank you to the Basehor-Linwood USD 458 Board of Education members who are committed to the success of every student in our communities of Basehor and Linwood.

Our board of education includes: Dayna Miller (President), Shelley Stevens (Vice-President), Tim Hill, Spencer Fritz, Tracey Hannah and two out-going members: Jeanette Klamm and Lori Van Fleet. At the January 13th Board meeting, we will welcome Gary Johnson and Aaron Eusterwiemann onto the Board!

These nine community leaders volunteer many hours attending meetings, reading reports and discussing plans and programs to support educational achievement.

“Our board members develop policies and make complex decisions that shape the future of our education system. They are accountable for an annual budget of $36 million, 2,604 students, and 376 employees,” said David Howard, USD 458 Superintendent.

A board member’s responsibility goes far beyond the monthly meeting, however.

“They also meet with legislators and other policy makers to advocate for our schools to make sure every child has access to an excellent education.

“We are grateful to have this opportunity to formally say ‘thank you’ to each of them,” said Howard.

Basehor-Linwood USD 458 encourages the entire community to thank a school board member, not only this month but throughout the entire year for their service and dedication to our students!

Mr. Diehl's physics students have been constructing devices to simulate landing on Mars. This was a very elaborate egg-drop project. Students acted as EDL (Entry, Descent and Landing) Engineers from NASA, and they had to design and conduct several tests for their creation to carry 4 passengers (eggs), and include a parachute and airbag system. The project allowed students to learn first-hand and apply topics of Terminal Velocity, Work Potential and Kinetic Energy, Forces, Netwon's Laws, Momentum and Impulse.

Students then wrote up official NASA Validation and Verification reports with all of their research, data, calculations and results.

Basehor-Linwood High School and Basehor Intermediate hosted the Southern Leavenworth County Leadership Development Class last Wednesday! SLCLDC heard presentations from students in the Bobcat Success Academy and Innovation Academy before listening to a panel of area Superintendents speak during lunch at Basehor Community Library.
