Happy New Year and a New Decade to you!
I hope you all had a joyous and restful holiday with friends and family and are excited to blast into the New Year.
There are a few key updates in this month's newsletter including detail on the new and exciting Freestylerz Festival format for BC Champs, the Peter and Vickie Dueck Memorial Scholarship, an officials clinic at Sun Peaks, and updates from our Provincial Teams, including 2 of our BC athletes representing Canada at the Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lausanne, Switzerland.

If you are looking for a great read check out Range by David Epstein.  This is a great perspective on the value of generalization over early specialization.  For those sports fans out there this is a great recap of the last decade, from CBC.

The year is shaping up quite nicely, already.

Happy Trails everyone,

Josh
In the spirit of giving opportunity, it is with heartfelt joy that we at Freestyle BC announce the first annual Peter and Vickie Dueck Memorial Scholarship.

Peter and Vickie truly believed in the power of community, sport, and the value of education. This scholarship is aimed to support their values and encourage our athletes to be their best, both on and off the field of play.

The goal is to perform well in all disciplines || Moguls, Dual Moguls, Slopestyle, Halfpipe, and Big Air.  The results from each discipline, at each Timber Tour stop, will be accumulated.  The top 3 male and female skiers overall (no age category) will earn an RESP scholarship package to further their post-secondary education.  This award is an effort to support and encourage our athletes to be diverse, balanced and playful skiers for life.

Prize schedule

1st place $3000 RESP
2nd place $2000 RESP
3rd place $1000 RESP

Performance Team updates
The Mogul team is off to a great start to this competition season!  Mid-December was their first major, Canadian Selections, hosted by Apex Freestyle.

Overall our athletes had a strong start with several personal bests. Highlights include finals appearances by Kassidy Todd, Jessie Linton, Maya Mikkelsen, Josh Maga, Sam Cordell & Koleton Phipps.  The competition was exceptionally stiff this year with talented skiers from other Provincial Teams, the Canadian NextGen Team, and the Japanese National Team.

Our Park team has been training diligently in Whistler and Silver Star over the holidays in preparation for the coming NorAm and Canada Cup events.  We are all thrilled to cheer on our BC Team athletes Skye Clarke and Steven Kahnert at the 3rd Youth Olympic Winter Games, starting on January 18th.  Schedule here

Professional Development

Officials Level 3 Workshops at Sun Peaks, February 26-29

The goal of the level 3 officials workshop is to develop new and existing Major Officials for the roles of Chief of Competition, Chief of Course, Technical Delegate and Scoring for Freestyle Events in BC, and begin steps toward national and international level officiating.  We will be using a workshop format, which promotes a sharing of experience and techniques through a hands-on approach to learning in the real-life freestyle event environment.  We strongly encourage representation from all clubs.

Facilitators – Evan Phillips, Andrew Clough

There is no fee for these workshops.
No previous experience required.
