1.  Revealed: The Theme Parks Beating The World’s Top Sports Leagues In Attendance

Disney’s theme parks had higher total attendance last year than any major sports league worldwide according to new research.  The data shows that in 2018 Disney’s 14 parks around the world attracted an estimated 157.3 million visitors which is more than double its nearest challenger – Major League Baseball. The MLB’s attendance total of 69.6 million is driven by a mighty tally of 2,415 matches which is far more than the number held by the NFL or the NBA.

2.  West Edmonton Mall’s Galaxyland to undergo Hasbro-themed rebrand

After 24 years of of being space themed, the amusement park at West Edmonton Mall is getting a big makeover due to a new licensing agreement with toy and entertainment giant Hasbro.  Galaxyland will undergo a transformation that will include Hasbro brands such as My Little Pony, Monopoly, G.I. Joe, Nerf, Play-Doh, Battleship, Operation, and more.

3.  Australia’s Village Roadshow Receives $530 Million Takeover Offer

Village Roadshow, the embattled Australian studios, cinemas and theme parks group, has received a takeover offer worth more than $500 million from a financial group.  The company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, where share trading was halted ahead of the announcement. Management said that it is considering the offer, and that it will cooperate with the bidder’s due diligence.

4.  Virtual Queue at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Opens with Advertised Park Hours

We’re happier than a womp rat in a sand storm about the response we’ve been getting for our newest attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. It’s clear guests visiting Black Spire Outpost are enjoying the opportunity to help the Resistance in their fight against the First Order.

5.  American Dream Miami mall and theme park targets 2021 groundbreaking 

The American Dream Miami mall and theme park now has a groundbreaking expected in late 2021, said according to the developer’s lead attorney.  The project in northwest Miami-Dade County would be the largest mall and amusement park in North America with over 6.2 million square feet of space plus 2,000 hotel rooms. It would attract 30 million visitors a year.

6.  Super 78 debuts new flying theatre attraction in Bali

Super 78, the award-winning attractions design studio, has debuted Flying Over Indonesia at Trans Studio Theme Park in Bali.  Super 78 is pleased to announce the launch of Flying Over Indonesia, a new flying theatre attraction set to wow visitors at Trans Studio Theme Park in Bali, Indonesia. 

7.  Comcast to Host Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2019 Earnings Conference Call

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2019-- Comcast Corporation will host a conference call with the financial community to discuss financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2019 on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time (ET). Comcast will issue a press release reporting its results earlier that morning.

8.  Take to the Skies with Sea World Helicopters in their all new world-class Terminal

Sea World Helicopters has officially opened its new multi-million-dollar Helicopter terminal.  The new helicopter terminal includes an updated check-in and reception area, new helipads along with a larger hangar to provide guests with a truly world-class helicopter experience.  The Sea World Helicopters terminal forms part of the larger tourism hub at Sea World and is located next door to the theme park and Sea World Cruises terminall Village Roadshow Theme Parks COO, Bikash Randhawa said it is an exciting time for Sea World Helicopters.

9.  Cedar Fair Appoints Daniel J. Hanrahan Board Chairman

Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (NYSE: FUN), a leader in regional amusement parks, water parks and immersive entertainment, announced today it has appointed Dan Hanrahan as its independent board chairman, effective January 1, 2020. Mr. Hanrahan has served on Cedar Fair’s Board of Directors since June 2012, most recently as chair of the Compensation Committee.

10.  Efteling shows series of new designs from roller coaster Max & Moritz

The Efteling shows today for the first time in detail what we can expect from the new roller coaster Max & Moritz. The amusement park presents a series of new designs from the double powered coaster, which will open in the spring of 2020 at the old location of the Bob. 3D animations of the environment are also shown.

11.  New £12m luxury hotel opens on Blackpool Promenade

A new luxury £12m hotel has opened in Blackpool.  The Boulevard Hotel, located on Blackpool Promenade, has 120 rooms across five-storeys.  Commissioned by owners, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the new hotel features a 90-seat restaurant – The Beachside – as well as conferencing and event facilities.

12.  Theme park holiday preview: How Disney, Universal Studios and other parks are celebrating

If all you want for Christmas are your two front seats – on a roller coaster – you’re in luck. Theme parks used to call it a season soon after Labor Day, but many of them now remain open through the end of the year and offer holiday events (as well as rides aboard their coasters). Let’s go over the river and through the woods to see what some parks have in store this year.

13.  Universal to introduce streaming service with theme park event

Universal Studios Hollywood will help launch a publicity push for corporate parent NBCUniversal's new streaming video service with a two-day, hard-ticket event at the park.  Peacock Live will take over the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood on March 28 and 29. The event will include a preview of Peacock - the new streaming service - with celebrity panels, meet and greets and giveaways.

14.  Cyprus-based Farrag Fun World plans to build 100 mln euro amusement park in Bosnia

Cyprus-based company Farrag Fun World plans to build an amusement park worth 100 million euro ($111.3 million) in Bosnia, the local authorities said.  The planned amusement park will be located in the area of Lukavac, some 120 km north of Sarajevo, and will have roller coasters, a bowling alley, a cart racing track, a children's playground, a virtual reality zone, a laser hall, as well as many restaurants and shops, the Tuzla Canton government said in a statement on Wednesday after a meeting with the CEO of Farrag Fun World.

As 2019 nears its end, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is ready to celebrate the New Year with a lineup of festivities.  Next year will be filled with new attractions, events, and more for guests to enjoy at the park – including the highly-anticipated spring opening of Iron Gwazi, North America’s tallest hybrid coaster and the fastest and steepest hybrid coaster in the world.

17.  Villains Caravan, more coming to Villains After Hours at Magic Kingdom

Disney Villains After Hours will soon return to Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, and with it will come a few new offerings to the event.  A new offering called the Villains’ Cursed Caravan will join Maleficent the dragon as she stalks through the park twice nightly. The procession will feature Gaston, Oogie Boogie, Cruella DeVil, Captain Hook, and more. Keep in mind, this wicked event doesn’t include or offer character meet-and-greets.

18.  Weird accident with carousel on French Christmas market

At the Christmas market in the French town of Parthenay a bizarre accident happened with a merry-go-round. A gondola that contained three children broke off during a ride last Friday. Local media report this.  The incident took place just before 8 p.m. The gondola was first released from the merry-go-round and then fell over. Eyewitnesses managed to break the fall and evacuated the children.

19.  Universal Orlando Launches U-Preferred Agency Program

Travel agents and advisors should be taking notice as Universal Parks & Resorts Vacations announced its new U-Preferred Agency Program.  Established to celebrate and recognize Universal Orlando’s top-selling travel agencies, the U-Preferred Agency Program will make selling theme park vacations more enjoyable by offering members unique benefits, exclusive opportunities and more.

20.  Knoebels mum on ride removal for 2020

One of the rides at Knoebels Amusement Resort won’t be back next year, but the park isn’t saying which one will go.  Knoebels spokeswoman Stacy Ososkie told WBRE-TV the undisclosed ride will be removed before the amusement park in Elysburg opens in April.

1.  Cineplex: Acquisition By Cineworld Is Good News For Cineplex's Shareholders

Cineplex announced that it has agreed to be acquired by Cineworld Group at a price of C$34 per share.

2.  Museums Throw Open the Storage Rooms, Letting In the Public

Only a small fraction of collections are usually on view. But one Dutch museum wants to make everything available, and others are watching to see what they can learn.

 

3.  KidZania opens 1st ever mock-up hotel with Hotel Sentral Group

EDUTAINMENT centre, KidZania has partnered with Hotel Sentral Group to create its first ever hotel in the seven-year-old establishment, as it aims to introduce new perspectives on the hospitality industry to children.

4.  DREAMHACK AND THE EUROPEAN TOUR TO LAUNCH ESPORTS GOLF SERIES IN 2020

Europe’s primary golf tour, the European Tour and DreamHack will begin the European eTour series next year. Competitors will be playing TopGolf’s World Golf Tour (WGT).

5.  SM Entertainment announces opening of VR theme park at COEX Artium

The theme park will include 5 VR attractions for fans, who'll be able to experience virtual rides with their favorite SM Entertainment idols. So far, the confirmed themes are amusement park Everland's rides 'Safari & Lost Valley' featuring EXO's Kai and Red Velvet's Irene as well as 'Memory Room' featuring NCT Dream.

6.  Kids will love this Sky Zone trampoline park on Carnival’s latest ship

The latest can-you-top-this attraction at sea, unveiled Wednesday on Carnival Cruise Line’s new Carnival Panorama, is a Sky Zone trampoline park.

7.  Round1 with bowling, arcade games opening at Fashion District Philadelphia

The entertainment center occupies more than 60,000 square feet on the third floor of the mall, across from the newly opened AMC dine-in theater.

8.  Autobahn Indoor Speedway adds new barbecue concept to complex

In yet another addition to its growing entertainment complex, Autobahn Indoor Speedway recently opened an 8,300-square-foot barbecue concept – bringing in-house food and alcohol to the complex for the first time.

9.  Ardmore Clubhouse construction costs increase by $58,000

City commissioners voted Monday to increase the contract by more than $58,000 for a new family entertainment center called The Clubhouse.

10.  Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s $150 million expansion inches closer to completion

Back in June, DLR Group|Westlake Reed Leskosky was selected to design the next phases of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) Centennial Transformation Project. The multiphase project was initiated over ten years ago and includes several phases of renovations, as well as a 50,000 square-foot addition for education and exhibition spaces. 
Waterpark / Aquatics News

1.  £175m waterpark and spa proposal must wait until March 2020 for green light

Plans for a £175m (US$228.7m, €205.7m) indoor tropical waterpark and spa in Manchester, UK, will have to wait until March for approval, with the local council set to consider the proposal in March 2020.  Therme Group and developer Peel L&P initially submitted plans in July 2019 for public consultation, with a planning application to Trafford Council following last month.

2.  Massanutten announces outdoor waterpark expansion coming in 2020

Massanutten Resort will make a big splash in 2020 with an expansion to its 88,000-square-foot outdoor waterpark.  The wave of excitement includes three new slides with classic twists and turns, tight coils of extreme Gs, and the zero gravity sensation of a reverse freefall on a 47-foot half-pipe.  A new outdoor bar, enhanced kiddie area, and bathhouse will wrap up the waterpark expansion.

3.  Super Hero movies are coming to Yas Waterworld's big screens

Abu Dhabi: Cinema Under the Stars is returning to Yas Waterworld’s big screens for its second season with a Super Hero edition.  Set to take place on 20, 27 December and 1, 10 January, super hero fanatics are in for a treat at the world’s leading waterpark. Yas Waterworld will be screening fan-favorite DC Super Hero movies, including Wonder Woman, Batman Returns, Superman: The Quest for Peace and Justice League.

4.  Cold Weather Prompts Closure of Orlando Water Parks

Another round of cold weather in Central Florida has caused Orlando's water parks to close.  Universal's Volcano Bay, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Aquatica Orlando are closed Wednesday and Thursday. Island H2O Live!, Margaritaville Resort Orlando's water park, is also closed Wednesday.
Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  Detroit Zoo's Great Lakes Nature Center getting bigger, more expensive; but no site yet

For the second time, the Detroit Zoo's proposed Great Lakes Nature Center in Macomb County is getting bigger and more expensive.  But there's one catch.  The site for the center that will focus on Great Lakes water and wildlife "has not yet been finalized," Patricia Janeway, the zoo's communications director, told the Free Press in an email.

2.  Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo names new director; opening date announced

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is no longer the “little zoo that could.”  The zoo is kicking off the new year with a long awaited new location, and newly named executive director.  The zoo’s new leader, Joel Hamilton, has a busy first couple months on the job, but says he’s excited for new beginnings.

3.  Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo expanding to include holiday park

Folly Farm is inviting guests to ‘stay and play’, with work now underway on the holiday park expansion. The new holiday park will be located next door to Folly Farm in Pembrokeshire.

4.  Meet the St. Louis Aquarium's new otters

The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will open its doors on Christmas Day — but we've got a sneak peek at three of its new residents.  Thatcher, Sawyer and Finn, the aquarium's new otter family, will reside inside their new two-story habitat, with their animal care manager Kat Echevarria close by.

5.  Parking garage could be coming to Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo could solve some of its parking issues with a garage, the City of Memphis, the Zoo and Overton Park Conservancy announced Wednesday.   If the city and zoo build a garage, it could follow a traditional maxim of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland, "build-up not out."

The Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo has named six new board members throughout 2019. The mission of Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo is to support BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, which will mark its 50th anniversary in 2020.  The new board members are:

7.  Daisy, the oldest giraffe at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo has died

The oldest giraffe at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo has died Wednesday.  The 26-year-old giraffe, Daisy, was put to death by the zoo's animal health team due to her severe joint disease. The keeper staff say she was losing weight and signs of her health was declining.

8.  Aratag mobile app helps attractions to educate and engage with visitors

Aratag, the mobile application for visitors to zoos, museums, parks and other tourist attractions, was launched by Pangea Rocks this November at the annual Worldwide Aquarium and Zoos Association (WAZA) conference.

9.  WOOLWORTHS ZERO WASTE INITIATIVE BENEFITS ANIMALS AT SYDNEY ZOO

Sydney Zoo has partnered with Woolworths and through its Woolworths Stock Feed for Farmers program is utilising the supermarket's surplus fresh food as animal feed.  From chimpanzees, zebras, camels and even orangutans, animals at Sydney Zoo will be feeding on this surplus fresh food rescued from Woolworths - food that is no longer suitable for sale or human consumption - thereby playing their part in the circular economy.

10.  Aquarium races to save turtles washed ashore on Cape Cod

Nearly 200 hypothermic — and in many cases injured and highly endangered — sea turtles have washed up on Cape Cod beaches over the last month, leaving the staff at the New England Aquarium’s Animal Care Center in Quincy scrambling to save their lives.
Tourism / Other News

1.  Cultural heritage offers hope for tourism

Rajasthan’s Deeg Jal Mahal, or Water Palace, is an Indian cultural treasure. Built in the 18th century, the fusion of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles features expansive gardens, abundant waterways and graceful pink sandstone buildings. Among its airy pavilions is a mud-wrestling pit.

2.  PABLO ESCOBAR'S FORMER MEXICAN HIDEAWAY TO BECOME $100 MILLION LUXURY BEACH RESORT

Located in Tulum on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Casa Magna has been bought by New York real estate firm Thor Equities Group who will be turning Escobar's former Mexican hideaway into a 40-room luxury resort offering a spa and high-end shops, Bloomberg reports.

3.  Construction for Lafayette’s New $90 Million Airport Terminal Underway

The new building will be 120,000-square feet (twice the size of the current one), holding two TSA lanes with an option for a third and five gates, with an option of adding two additional, after the old terminal is torn down.
The new terminal will be a handicap accessible structure and will also feature two new bag claim belts as well as rent-a-car counters.

4.  Hyperloop developer pushes Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Chicago route to local tourism industry

Now that a feasibility study has shown it is physically and financially possible to build a hyperloop system linking Pittsburgh to Cleveland and Chicago, developers of the system to move passengers and freight in high-speed, low-pressure tubes are taking their pitch on the road.

5.  Seattle-Tacoma International Airport makes its gate-pass program permanent

Earlier this week, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) made permanent the SEA Visitor Pass program, which gives non-ticketed guests access to the secure side of the airport.
