It’s here: Sharehold’s final workweek of 2019! I’ve been tapping the snooze button every morning, longing for the holiday break ahead.

Before I can stop setting an alarm at all, however, there are still many threads to snip, stamps to lick, t’s to cross, and a few other details I’m probably forgetting. I’m really good at keeping up momentum through the thick of an effort, though I’m realizing that I’m not so good at wrapping up. It’s a struggle to close with a bang (and the brevity of this newsletter on the topic is not lost on me, either).

So, how do you honor endings? Is there something special you do as a team to offboard clients? Do you have a favorite end-of-year reflection? Do you burn sage to energetically clear space for something new? Share your ending rituals by replying to this email.

P.S. – This is our last newsletter issue for 2019! You’ll see us back in your inbox in January. Here’s to progress in the year ahead.

The whole team nodded along with this HBR story on why design thinking is such a challenge for some teams. My fav quote: “The truth is that the same aspects of design-thinking methods that make them difficult for employees to handle are also the source of their power.”
Part of why I’m so excited for next year is the growing attention on how companies must shift the emphasis on shareholder value. I’m keeping my eyes on this subsection of Quartz, on the purpose of companies, for breaking stories and new voices as this movement grows.
In context of the lack of meaningful metrics in our work, I’m curious about the new Job Quality Index, which compares “higher-wage/higher-hour jobs versus lower-wage/lower-hour jobs.” Beyond more nuanced conversations about the labor market, can the JQI serve as inspiration for community measurement, too?
For those of you following the roles, responsibilities, and liabilities of social platforms, this exploration of how 1st Amendment rights were crossed by an intentionally-seizure-inducing tweet is a worthy read. Is it time for systemic regulation? (via Christine)
While waiting for a delayed flight last week, a flight attendant lightened the mood by telling Santa jokes over the intercom. But can flight delays be avoidable altogether? We’re interested in where these out-of-the-box flight delay solutions are heading.
Do you use a custom signature block in your emails? Recently, I’ve been signing my emails from my laptop as “Towards progress” and my iPhone as “From Sarah’s Travel Computer.” But maybe I should add a bit more of a special touch?
What’s an end-of-year newsletter without a roundup article? Enjoy this Buzzfeed list on the memes that defined us in the 2010s. Let’s pick some to revive next year – send us your favorites. (via Christine)
In a timely piece before the holidays, Mike Tannenbaum shares with us the importance of stepping away to avoid the “I just can’t even” feeling. And on that note, here’s our 2020 sign off! Nope, there’s no wildcard this week – see ya next year. Rest up.
