#MakeTheWorldGretaAgain

I think it’s not an easy task to write about a company which you have had the chance to only join recently, but when you see the kind of heart, soul and hard-work which is put into it every breathing day of the year, it becomes easy.

We're wrapping up (half) a decade of fueling the future of energy with the 5 Ds (Decentralization, Decarbonization, Disruption, Digitization & Democratization), and it hasn't been anything short of eventful.

SOLshare ® was founded with one motive in the beginning: To brighten the future. We began our journey in 2015, and as eventful it was, let me tell you it has not been easy. We have a women-led team of production who, many a times, have chosen to overlook their priorities and continued delivering us results. We have a team of engineers who go out on a limb to make sure the product is up and running, and most importantly, ever-evolving. We have people in the general management who are striving harder every day to only cope up with pace of our ever-growing company, and yet they manage to deliver results.

While governments, policy-makers and people in general have become more accepting towards achieving the SDG goals, the exponentially deteriorating ffects of climate change loom over us with a threat never encountered in the history of mankind: An apocalypse.

But not of the world.

Mother Nature has survived millennia and it can survive hundreds of millennia to come- with or without us. She’s smart, unlike how we have been. So, if anyone is dying, here’s a reality check: It’s us. Studies say the most daunting task will be to adapt the metabolism of our economies to match the carrying capacity of the earth and stay well below 2°C global warming. So, wish us, we’ll need that luck.

Solshare, however, has been playing a proactive role long since the great Greta Thunberg came into light. In 2015, we found out Bangladesh had already over 4 million solar home systems installed,  and they produce USD one billion in energy assets that are wasted in an environment where energy is extremely scarce, namely in the off-gird areas of the country. Ever since, we haven't looked back.

Today just like Greta, we’re going to take you on a journey of storytelling, so that you know why we have a mission and why we don’t think it’s not impossible.

THE BEGINNING OF A HAPPILY EVER AFTER

SOLshare currently has over 25 operational microgrids in remote off grid areas around Bangladesh. We have also begun our first installations in India.

Our solar peer-to-peer microgrids are currently serving over 3,000 beneficiaries.

The Social Return on Investment (SROI) as calculated by
IIX Global, an external party, estimates that
USD 4.85 of impact is created for every USD 1 raised for a P2P solar grid operated.

We are one of the 100 companies listed in the
Global Cleantech 100 and addressed as a
Tech Pioneer by the WEF in 2018.

But all this is not a result of a day, an example
of overnight success but nights and days of
struggling and getting it right.

SOLshare's P2P energy trading platform called the SOLbazaar)

We’re constantly working to make an environment which is inclusive, symbiotic and sustainable. These days companies are drawing attention to issues such as climate change, corruption, rule of law, the empowerment of women, human rights, consumption and supply chain practices, but what’s the point if you have a plate but nothing to serve on it? This is why we think it’s imperative that business models are sustainable, not because it’s the right thing to do, but also that it serves a company’s long-term commercial interests.

To Survive Is to Create

a Sustainable Business Model

The SOLshare model is fully aligned with the community. As the community grows, so does our revenuThe SOLshare Modele. business sustainability encompasses

The model constitutes a 3-step approach:

I. Access to Energy & Internet:
the last mile of electricity distribution solved with clean, reliable and affordable energy, as well as internet in the making.

II. Economic Mobility & Livelihoods / Market Development:
a. Skills training, including entrepreneurship.
b. Access to financial products and services.
c. Market linkages: access to new products, buyers and suppliers.

III. Community Driven Development:
With communities/community-centered organizations owning the SOLgrid, the income share earned from trading electricity is reinvested into improving healthcare and education services.

Adapting to a Sustainable Business Model

SOLshare has developed SOLbazaar , an IoT-driven trading platform which enables people to trade the excess solar energy generated by solar home systems.
Consider the
Solbazaar as a dynamic energy marketplace where SHS-users (Solar Home System users) come to sell their excess energy to non-SHS-users, or people who can’t, unfortunately, afford a SHS for that matter.
One party earns money, the other party finally gets access to affordable electricity. T
he energy sellers can also choose to keep the excess energy to themselves and rather utilize it to run extra appliances like a TV, fridge, or computer.

THE DAMOISEAU IN DISTRESS

Binodh Mridha, is a 29-year-old who is a son to a widower and a father to two children. As a professional, he is a tea picker and has barely anything left after paying his monthly bills. When he caught the wind of SOLbazaar’s arrival, he said it was a “godsend.” With our P2P solar energy trading platform, Binodh (energy buyer) partakes in a monetary exchange with a prosumer (energy seller, also buyer) with the help of our company-built SOLapp, and then has the energy transmitted to his SOLbox through our bi-directional smart meter, the SOLbox. Now Bindodh’s school-going kids are able to study at night and his aging mother doesn’t perspire her way to sleep. This makes us heave a sigh of relief as since our inception one of the goals we’ve have striven to achieve is the making of basic amenities accessible & most importantly, affordable. This brings us to answer one of your FAQs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do the people who can’t afford the panel & battery pay for the power or our system?

Our users are able to pay for the Solbox (and the installation cost) which we give at a subsidized cost.  Because we work in a B2B model, if they can't pay at once, they pay in small installments- provided through our partners. For regular electricity access, they have to top up their SOLboxes through mobile money with the help of our Solapp. Sounds like a lot of money going through the roof? Nope! Due to the energy cost being decentralized, it doesn’t add to people’s financial constraints, but rather reduces it.

The Climax: Frowns & Creased Brows

All this would’ve sounded downright impossible five years back, and you might’ve thought we were crazy when we said electricity could become accessible to everyone. We’ve seen frowns and creased brows, but all to prove the detractors wrong! For the first time sharing something is multiplying it. Consumers are exchanging stored electricity from the grid, and more houses are being lit up everyday. A rise in everyday top-up is a testament to that.

This is why despite having failed in the past,
we’ve never stopped focusing on making our products and services better.
Our newly recruited Jr. Product Manager says,“I think why product development is one of the most crucial aspects of a business is that it requires a person to be dexterous in different departments.”

GETTING CAST IN HOLLYWOOD?

Hahaha, we’re only joking!

But award-winning director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film) wasn’t when he embarked on a personal journey to explore what the future could look like by the year
2040 if we embraced the best solutions available today to improve our planet and wellbeing, and Solshare has been broadcasted as one of the top sustainable solution providers. Already among the best documentaries of all times in Australia, it depicts that the future of energy starts in Bangladesh.

Then What Do You Do If You Can't Make It to Hollywood?

You take a selfie with a celebrity!

At this year’s World Economic Forum, our managing director, Sebastian Groh, had the honor of sharing the stage with the Honourable PM of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.

The past couple of years have been quite humbling with all the awards and prizes which have come our way. we've won, we've lost and we've advanced, nonetheless.

Few Notable Acheivements

The Beginning Doesn’t End

The multiple number of awards and prizes haven’t made us blind; in fact, we still find ourselves disoriented. Sometimes it’s not even easy to set a goal: Over two billion people lack access to reliable electricity globally, where do we even start from?
How do we start?
As these questions still bewilder us, we realize there is no happily ever after, there is only work to make it sustain. Happily-ever after is not a goal, it is a state. And achieving the SDG goals is the process to take. So as a decade comes to end, we promise to work harder, find smarter strategies and impact more lives positively, and we leave ourselves with one question: Will we ever make it?
This makes us ponder that the biggest taxi company in the world has no taxis, the biggest hotel company in the world has no beds, what will the energy utility of the future look like?
You bet we know the answer.
