December 2019

New on the Religion in Public blog

Our Centre's Religion in Public blog has recently featured several items worth reading:
  • A Q&A with Professor Johanna Stiebert about her recent book Rape Myths, the Bible, and #MeToo.
  • As Researcher of the Month December, the blog featured Dr Mikel Burley, who shares with us about his research into cross-cultural philosophy of religion and South Asian religions.
  • To commemorate World Aids Day, Dr Adriaan van Klinken wrote a blog piece about his recent work with The Nature Network, a group of LGBT refugees in Nairobi, Kenya, entitled "HIV Positive and Human".

Congratulations to Rev. Dr. Jamys Carter

Jamys Carter has successfully completed (subject to the correction of minor deficiencies) his PhD thesis 'A Critical Analysis of the Pentecostal Hermeneutics Used by Elim Local Church Leadership Teams in Relation to the Topic of Women in Ministry'. The thesis presents a qualitative empirical research exploring how the role of Scripture, Spirit and Community are navigated by Elim Pentecostals. In particular, it examines the hermeneutics of Elim lay leaders under tension, centring the discussion around the topic of women in ministry. The thesis demonstrates that the triad of Scripture, Spirit and Community are used in non-static ways, with the fluidity allowing for an incorporation of some interpretive differences, enhancing unity amongst the community of believers. Furthermore, the role of experience and relationships inform the hermeneutical process, as ways forward are found through the incorporation of a Pentecostal pragmatism, within the boundaries of the triad. The thesis was supervised by Professor Rachel Muers and Dr Adriaan van Klinken, and was examined by Professor William Kay (University of Chester) and Dr Al McFadyen (Leeds).

Launch of Professor Stiebert's book Rape Myths, the Bible and #MeToo

On Friday 20th December, the Sheffield-based Shiloh Project will host a book launch to celebrate the recent publication by its co-director, Professor Johanna Stiebert (University of Leeds). her book Rape Myths, the Bible and #MeToo is the inaugural volume in The Shiloh Project’s book series ‘Rape Culture, Religion and the Bible‘ with Routledge Focus. Seminar "Unexpected responses to a gay bishop"

On the 16th January 2020, at Senate House (University of London) Dr Caroline Starkey (Leeds) and Professor Grace Davie (University of Exeter) will be discussing their recent research into the letters sent to Bishop Nicholas Chamberlain (The Bishop of Grantham) after he publicly declared he was gay and in a same-sex relationship - the first Church of England Bishop to do so. Details of the event, which features a Q and A with Bishop Nicholas, are here. The event on the 16th of January has been hugely popular - and all the tickets sold out within a couple of days. They are hoping to host similar events in the north of England in 2020.

Starkey and Davie have published a recent blog post about their research and its conclusions for the LSE Faith and Global Society series.  Their journal article was published in Ecclesial Practices in 2019, and Brill have confirmed that this will soon be freely available/open access until February 2020.

CRPL research event about "Researching Religion and Public Life: Issues of Power, Authority and Representation"

On 24th January, the Centre for Religion and Public Life organises a research event about the theme “Researching Religion and Public Life: Issues of Power, Authority and Representation".
This is a day to share ideas and experiences on issues of power, authority and representation within and around religious communities, and to start to shape a future research agenda. How does our research in and with religious communities interact with understandings of power, authority and representation within those communities? How do we navigate the relationships between religious communities, state authorities and policy agendas, and research and impact agendas?

All CRPL members, and University of Leeds researchers with relevant research interests, are welcome.
We would welcome offers of short presentations (up to 10 minutes) by any CRPL member on how these issues arise in your research.
  • Time: 10am-2pm (including lunch), Baines Wing seminar room 2.10.
  • RSVP please to Rachel Muers r.e.muers@leeds.ac.uk, confirming whether you’d be interested in presenting, and also whether you’re staying for lunch.

ABOUT THE Centre for Religion and Public Life

The Centre for Religion and Public Life at the University of Leeds is a hub for research into the important, and increasingly contentious, role of religion in public life in the world today, both locally, nationally and internationally. It provide a forum in which contemporary research and scholarship can be debated and disseminated. The Centre works closely with non-academic partners to identify the ways in which religion is relevant to their work and to produce research that is capable of meeting their need to better understand the nature of religion and religious organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
