Bulletin #009 - 19/12/19

www.buckscc.gov.uk/A40LondonRoad
A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.

This phase of works focusing on junction construction builds on the technological improvements already made including new CCTV, refurbishment of all signalised pedestrian crossings, variable message boards and queue detection sensors. The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater will include improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions.  When all works are fully completed next year, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre.
Recent Works

Construction work has been finished until the New Year to ensure there is no impact on the road network in the lead up to the Christmas period. Since the last bulletin update the following work has been completed:
  • The new puffin crossing on Gordon Road has been installed and commissioned. The surrounding works to construct the new crossing point with dropped kerbs and tactile paving; as well as traffic detectors installed in the carriageway have also been completed.
  • Line markings have been refreshed around the Gordon Road roundabout.
  • The construction of a new pedestrian refuge island on London Road, near the junction with Kings Road has been completed.
Upcoming Works

Further construction will begin in January 2020 at the Rayners Avenue junction and at Hatters Lane roundabout. Additional information about the detailed programme of work and traffic management will be shared in January.

Rayners Avenue

Work at the signalised junction of Rayners Avenue/ London Road/ Frederick place will begin in January. The introduction of new technology will mean the junction can work in co-ordination with others along the corridor and be optimised to adapt to traffic conditions. Construction work includes:
  • Replace and upgrade all traffic signals equipment and install new controller cabinets;
  • Refurbish the pedestrian crossing 50m south of the junction;
  • Refresh line markings.
Hatters Lane Roundabout

Work to widen London Road near Hatters Lane roundabout will also begin in January. The carriageway widening will provide a bus lane across the roundabout, extending to the existing inbound bus lane. Construction work also includes:
  • Relocation of inbound bus stop away from the roundabout exit. This will ensure buses do not block existing inbound traffic, improving junction safety and capacity.
  • Relocation and upgrade of uncontrolled crossing to line up with the new bus stop location.
Communications

We will continue to provide regular project updates through social media and website updates as well as e-bulletins.  We will also keep road users informed of works through static and variable message signs erected on the A40.
