Latest news
As the longest ever COP talks ended with a compromise deal, ISC Special Envoy Flavia Schlegel called upon the science community to provide knowledge that can help countries to take action. The ISC Community was active at COP25, with the Future Earth programme releasing 'ten new insights in climate science' and Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) delivering statements during the Earth Information Day of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA). ISC is now collecting views on possible themes for Earth Information Day in 2020.
The need for deep transformations has been re-iterated many times in recent weeks, notably by UN Secretary General António Guterres. In line with this call, the German Advisory Council on Global Change, with the support of the ISC and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, has launched an online charter to promote discussion on how to leverage the power of digital change to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Submit your feedback by 31 January.
Xiyue Wang, the Princeton graduate imprisoned in Iran on suspicion of spying, has now been released and will return to the United States. ISC President Daya Reddy had previously called for an end to Wang’s imprisonment in an open letter emphasising the importance of scientific freedom. The Council and its Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science (CFRS) are delighted with the news that Wang has been released.
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) celebrated its 40th anniversary with a symposium showcasing the many successes of the community over the last four decades, and highlighting some of the challenges and opportunities that climate science faces now and will face in the future. Since its creation in 1979, WCRP has considerably advanced research on climate predictability and human influence on climate, equipping decision-makers with essential information on climate-risk management, adaptation planning, and impacts and vulnerabilities assessment.
ISC Secretary Alik Ismail-Zadeh received the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Ambassador Award at the recent AGU meeting, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Earth and space science community.  In addition to serving on the ISC Governing Board, Alik has served on the advisory committees of several regional, international and intergovernmental organizations. His scientific interests cover geophysics, mathematical geosciences, natural hazards and disaster risk research.
In the latest in our blog series in the lead-up to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, we focus on the ocean in science-policy discussions.

During COP25, we heard from Loreley Picourt of the Ocean and Climate Platform that 'the stars are aligned for the ocean at the minute', with a great deal of recognition of ocean and climate linkages, and huge mobilization of civil society.

Lysa Wini-Simeon, Ocean Governance Officer for the Solomon Islands, told us how scientific knowledge was sourced for the development of the Solomon Islands' Ocean policy, and gave her top tips for scientists who want their research to be useful to policy makers

From our members

The International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), an affiliated member of ISC, has just published an open access book: the Manual of Digital Earth. “Digital Earth” is a global initiative to construct a comprehensive virtual representation of our planet. With the advance of digital technologies, this vision is quickly becoming a reality. The book covers the current status and future directions for Digital Earth research. It also showcases the capability of Digital Earth technologies in various areas, such as for the Sustainable Development Goals, climate change research, disaster mitigation, and so on.

Call for Nominations for the Scientific Committee for the Urban Health and Wellbeing programme
Urban Health and Wellbeing (UHWB) is a global science programme of the ISC, co-sponsored by the InterAcademy Parthership (IAP), the International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) and hosted by the Institute for Urban Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Xiamen, PR China. UHWB proposes a new conceptual framework for considering the multi-factorial nature of the determinants and the manifestations of health and wellbeing in urban populations. The ISC and the programme sponsors are pleased to invite nominations to serve on the Scientific Committee of UHWB. Find out more and submit nominations by 24 January 2020.

Comment on the online charter: 'Our Common Digital Future'
