TCHC’s 2020 budget continues to put tenants first

The Toronto Community Housing Board of Directors has approved a $1.11-billion budget for 2020 that will improve the tenant experience through investments in building capital repairs, better service delivery, and community safety and security.

The 2020 budget includes $629.7 million for operating, $350 million for building capital renewal and $130.5 million for development capital. It reflects the new permanent ongoing annual contribution by the City of Toronto of $160 million for building capital repairs and $251 million toward operations, which is the City’s largest single investment in Toronto Community Housing’s history.

Toronto Community Housing, the City of Toronto and The Daniels Corporation welcomed tenants returning to Regent Park at the official opening of TCHC’s newest building, 150 River Street, on December 15. The building contains 125 rent-geared-to-income units and 33 new affordable rental units. Tenants began moving into their new homes during the week of December 16-20.

With the opening of the 150 River St., more than half the original 2,083 homes that were in Regent Park when the revitalization began in 2006 have been replaced or are under construction on the 69-acre urban revitalization project.

A photo of a group on young kids and Toronto Community Housing employees at the the Aramark Kitchen located in the Rogers Centre.

Twenty Home Run Scholars kids took part in the Jays Care Kids Menu Design Day on November 30 in the Aramark Kitchen at the Rogers Centre. The special event gave the Grade 1 to 6 students a chance to learn what it's like to be a chef. The kids toured the Aramark executive kitchen and learned how some of the equipment works and what it’s used for. Later, the kids worked together in four teams to design and prepare ingredients for their dishes: potpies, pasta, chips and dips, and fruit cake. Menus judged as the best will be featured in the Rogers Centre executive suite menu. Sales proceeds will go toward Home Run Scholars operations.
