The kids are back in school this week after a nice long break. What's the best way to jumpstart academic motivation? It feels like we're starting a campfire by rubbing two sticks together with my kids. It's the second semester. Sports and afterschool clubs start back up. Our week will be filled with basketball practice, choir performances, youth group and AWANA. Game on! The family schedule is about to get busy again!

We need to reset our regular family dinners for a lot of reasons, one simply so we can reintroduce vegetables to offset all the carbs we ate for the past 3 weeks! Who wants to be my workout buddy? (Can we quit after we each lose 12 pounds?) 

Valentine's Day is 6 weeks away. Flowers are always in style, but if you want to have a creative gift this year, start planning now. Think romance! Don't be the guy in the grocery store picking out a Valentine card, February 13th at 9:30pm. She knows those Russell Stover chocolates came from CVS!

Superbowl Sunday is February 2nd. It's one of the rare years the Patriots won't be there.  (Superbowl Sunday is only 4 weeks away) Tom Brady will be watching the big game from the same place I am. The couch! -Scott Herrold & Jayar Reeves

The first few days of January some people get this massive itch to do some sort of life change. Move, tattoo, new baby, quit a job, add a job, change vehicles, start a new hobby. Whats the biggest shocker you pulled recently?

Making friends is hard when everyone you know is married! Everyone seems to have a family and you don’t want to feel like the 3rd wheel. I can imagine its hard to make new friends after a divorce or the loss of a spouse. I love this story about a 75 year old guy who recently lost his wife. He simply asked for a fishing buddy. His post went viral and he’s received over a hundred offers to fish with him! Full story here!

Angle: Maybe you can use that story to talk about what it takes to make new friends. How are you planning to be intentional so you can make some new friends this year? Calling in sick is often more trouble than it’s worth! You have to cover all these different duties and send 20 emails to cancel meetings & cover for your clients or co-workers. How does calling in sick affect you? Share your stories. Do you have to call your boss directly? Can you text them or email them or do you have to jump through some sort of HR hoop to stay home sick? Should you get roll over sick days if you dont use them? 

As a boss, how do you fill in for people when they are out? What drives you crazy as a boss when people try to call in sick?

As an employee, do you ever get nervous that being out sick could potentially show your employer that you are replaceable? Should you get paid for not being at work?

When Christmas ends each year I make a note about things I want to do next christmas…. but sadly I always forget the next christmas. Vicious cycle. Here’s a few examples: Put more effort into exterior lights, do a wacky family Christmas card, buy gifts months before Christmas shopping season, do a sweater party. How do you remedy the forgetfulness?

My kid watches hours of a dude just opening pokemon cards on Youtube. I give him grief about it. Then I think about the hours I spent a day as a kid playing make believe baseball games. Stats and everything. What did you do for hours a day as a kid?

Believe it or not, 2019’s Top 5 films were ALL Disney movies. The Daily Chronicle says, “Disney banked about $13 billion in worldwide box office in 2019, including a record number of $1 billion releases. Also, it’s the third year in a row that the year’s top 10 movies were all sequels, remakes and superhero films. Ethan Guzman was driving with his dad when he noticed a boy playing basketball without shoes. Ethan's father, Eman, pulled up to their apartment building when his son suddenly yelled "Stop!" Happy 2020. This server had a rough year. In 2018 she was living in a homeless shelter, but she's overcome addiction through 2019. Children with autism can easily be freaked out by loud noises or heavy crowds so taking them to see Santa at Christmastime was especially tough, but all season long, malls over the country  were opening early to allow autistic children to come see Santa in a calmer environment. Autism Speaks and Cherry Hills Program – partnered with 582 shopping areas all over America. Candice has always had a heart for others and when she was a teen, she worked as a waitress in Nashville and was heartbroken when people would come in to eat alone especially at Christmastime & New Year's. Candice now owns her own restaurant just outside of Nashville and every year since 2013, she’s been opening her doors and feeding everyone and anyone who walks in her doors for free, no questions asked. Not only that, but her and a team of volunteers helps prepare enough meals to be delivered to over 300 people who otherwise couldn’t afford a Christmas dinner. Full story here.
