The public is invited to join the City of Pasadena’s Human Relations Commission and the Pasadena Martin Luther King Community Coalition for “Rekindling the Light of Peace,” on Saturday, January 11, 10:00 a.m. at the Jackie Robinson Community Center, 1020 North Fair Oaks Avenue. Now in its 24th year, this free event features guest speakers, music, and poetry readings, and is a prelude to the celebrations that occur on the national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Terrence Roberts. Dr. Roberts is one of the Little Rock Nine, a group of nine African American students who enrolled at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.

The Human Services and Recreation Department and volunteer Black History Parade and Festival Planning Committee are honored to host the 39th Annual Pasadena Black History Parade and Festival. This is one of the longest-running and largest Black History celebrations in Southern California. A full schedule of events celebrates the achievements of and recognizes African Americans in U. S. History.  The parade begins on N. Fair Oaks Ave. and Figeroa Dr. at 10:00 a.m., and concludes at Robinson Park where the festival immediately follows the parade. The Red, Black, Green Honors Gala will be held on January 30, 2020 at The Rose, 245 E Green St.

Applications for Black History Parade Entry and Festival Vendors are still being accepted at Jackie Robinson Community Center for vendor and parade entries. Click here for the online vendor application. The Tiny Tots program is designed for little ones ready for pre-school recreational programming. The program delivers a fun learning experience through stimulating and interactive activities such as music, crafts, storytelling, and yoga. Participants will develop creative, physical and social skills. This is an excellent way for your tot to foster personal growth, friendships, and community. Registration is open! Please note: All tots must be fully potty-trained. 

  • Dates: January 6, 2020 – February 28, 2020* (* No class 1/20, 2/12, 2/17) 
  • Time: Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. 
  • Location: Central Park Center, 37 E. Del Mar Blvd.
  • Ages: 3-5
  • Fee: $110/$220 (resident/non-resident) per 8 week session

The Early Care and After School Adventures Program provides affordable, flexible and convenient before and after school childcare at 12 PUSD school sites. The program includes homework help, fitness, sports, and fun, age-appropriate enrichment activities like science projects and cooking. 

  • Locations: Jackson Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, Willard Elementary School, Jefferson Elementary School, San Rafael Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School, Webster Elementary School, Don Benito Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, Field Elementary School, Victory Park Center, and Hamilton Elementary School. 
  • Time: Times vary depending on the school site.
  • Ages: 5-12 year olds

Winter Mighty Mites Basketball  

Would you like your child to learn how to play a new sport, make friends, and stay physically active? Then sign up for the Mighty Mites Basketball. This program introduces boys and girls ages 4-8 to the fundamentals of basketball including shooting, dribbling, passing, and defense during a three-week training program. Following the training program, participants are divided into teams and will begin playing games. 

  • Dates: Saturday, January 11 –  Saturday, February 22 (There will be no games scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 15th due to the Black History Parade and Festival) 
  • Time: 8:45 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 
  • Training Locations: Victory Park Gym (Ages 4-5)
  • Fee: $65 residents /$95 non-residents 
  • Registration open through Saturday, January 18, 2020

Winter Youth Basketball League 

Basketball season is officially here and we have a fun, and exciting league waiting for you. The Winter youth basketball league introduces boys and girls in grades 3rd – 8th to basic and advanced basketball fundamentals including ball-handling, shooting, passing, and offensive and defensive drills. Both recreational (lower division) and competitive (upper division) leagues offered for each division. 

Participants wishing to enter the league, but not on a current team will be referred to teams at McKinley School, Robinson Park, Victory Park, and Washington Middle School. Players may also elect to play for their respective school. Practices for all teams started the week of December 16. 

  • Dates: January 11 – March 7th (There will be no games scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 15th due to the Black History Parade and Festival)  
  • Locations: McKinley Middle School Gym, Robinson Park Gym, Victory Park Gym, & Washington Middle School Gym 
  • Ages: 9-14 yrs. 
  • Divisions:  A Division (7-8th grade), B Division (5-6th grade), C Division (3-4th grade) 
  • Fee: $65 residents /$95 non-residents 
  • Registration open through Saturday, January 18, 2020

The Villa-Parke Youth Soccer League (V.P.Y.S.L.) is back for the 2020 season scheduled to run from March through June 2020 with playoffs in July 2020. The youth soccer league is devoted to the enjoyment and development of youth soccer players and provides an opportunity for participants to have fun, learn the sport, develop life skills and develop a love for the game. Teams practice twice per week and games are played on Saturdays. V.P.Y.S.L. has seven age divisions designated by birth year and accepts players and coaches of all skill levels.

Volunteer Soccer Coaches
V.P.Y.S.L. seeks committed volunteer soccer coaches to help develop players good sportsmanship, self-esteem, and to enhance techniques. All skill levels are welcome!

Time commitment: 2-4 hours a week for 16 weeks
Practice: Once or twice a week
Games & Days: One game a week, Saturday
Age Groups: Between 2 – 19 years (7 division age groups)
Location: Villa-Parke Community Center - 363 East Villa Street, Suite 202

Sports Scholarships

Scholarships are available through the City’s Passport to Fun! Youth Scholarship Program for soccer, flag football, basketball and volleyball. Applicants must meet income requirements and reside in Pasadena or attend a Pasadena Unified School District school. Scholarships cover 50% of registration fees and are awarded on a first come, first served basis until all funding is exhausted.
