IMAGE TRANSFER NOTES FROM ANNIE
If you want to know how to successfully make an Image Transfer onto a waterless plate here are the details of my 'Iron on' method:
Above is an example of a print from a plate where I used the method, you can see it picks up fine detail.
Drop tone from the artwork in Photoshop – Grayscale, Image - adjust, Posterize to 2 levels for best results.
·Print image onto transparency with a laser printer.
·Keep your fingers off the printed side.
·Remove dust from the surface of the plate and transparency by careful wiping of both surfaces, don't create static.
·Put the iron onto Hot setting no steam.
·Set the timer for 1½ minutes
·Cover with a sheet of paper and iron the surface for 1½ minutes, double for larger plate. Keep the iron moving or the transparency will buckle, don't press too hard either.
·Cool briefly, hold plate firmly and peel back as smoothly as you can. Try not to 'snap' as you peel the transparency off it will lift the toner.
·Add further media if desired eg Sharpie, Omnichrom etc.
·Apply silicone mixture and cure as usual.
·Remove image with acetone before rolling up and printing.
Experimenting with this years ago I realised that heat attached the toner to the paper on a laser print, I thought it might come off a transparency and was delighted after a few more experiments to get it actually working perfectly. You can see from the print above that a perfect transfer to your plate is possible. I have also tried making a negative in Photoshop and ironing it on to an aluminium plate before etching in a copper sulphate solution, although not perfect it looks pretty interesting. Enjoy, Annie
