Griffith's Remarkable Research Projects: Selected Snapshots
Spinetingling Griffith Research Secures $2m Funding
A Griffith team has successfully applied for Motor Accident Insurance Commission funding valued at $2m. Entitled BioSpine: the Personalised Digital Twin for Thought-driven Electromechanical Assistive Neurorehabilitation Devices program, this research has great potential to help people with spinal cord injury, a condition once thought of as irreversible. The research will explore restoring function in paralysis using a combination of thought control, electrical simulation and drug therapy, and will help cement Griffith’s international reputation in spinal cord injury research.
The research is led by Dr Claudio Pizzolato, Research Fellow in the Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ) and Dr Dinesh Palipana, MHIQ Research Fellow, junior doctor at Gold Coast University Hospital, and also Queensland’s first quadriplegic medical graduate. Other key project members include Professor David Lloyd and Professor Elizabeth Kendall, both at MHIQ.
The BioSpine project was officially announced on 22 November at the Advanced Design Prototyping Technologies (ADaPT) Institute by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carolyn Evans. Notable attendees included Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, Insurance Commissioner Neil Singleton and Meaghan Scanlon MP, Member for Gaven.

The NEW Griffith Experts
As most academics would be aware, the NEW Griffith Experts system was publicly released on 1 November 2019. The NEW Griffith Experts builds on the Symplectic Elements platform which rolled out earlier this year to manage and harvest research outputs. This can be accessed by logging into your Symplectic Elements page, which feeds in to the NEW Griffith Experts.
There are three different avenues of help and resources:
Tracking the Societal Impact of your Research with Impact Tracker
Griffith has implemented the online tool Impact Tracker by Vertigo Ventures to support researchers’ understanding, documenting and maximising the impact and societal benefits of their research outside or beyond academia. Impact Tracker is being used by researchers in Australia and the UK in multiple ways, including in designing and reviewing project proposals or tracking calendars and activities related to industry and the media.
