1.  Universal aims to finish first phase of Beijing theme park this year

The Universal Beijing Resort is expected to complete its first construction of rides and attractions of first phase within this year and has plans to officially open in 2021, according to the Beijing Daily.  The park will be the largest Universal theme park in the world. It will be the fifth Universal park in the world and third in Asia.

2.  All 'Rise' for the best new theme park attraction of the year

We're down to the final three categories in this year's Theme Park Insider Awards, with today's honor going to our readers' pick as the Best New Attraction of the past year. And to the surprise of probably no one who's been reading the site for the past month or so, it's Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

3.  Welcome New IAAPA Board Members | Jan. 2020

Jim Pattison Jr., ICAE, has been with Ripley Entertainment Inc. since 1990. He has held a variety of senior positions within the company, including vice president, new business; vice president, aquariums; and executive vice president, operations of Ripley attractions worldwide, before he was named president in December 2008. 

4.  Shanghai Disney Resort Announces New Pricing Structure

An announcement on the Shanghai Disney Resort is giving guests plenty of time to plan for new prices coming to the resort. The new prices will be arriving at Shanghai Disney Resort on June 6, 2020. Following the pricing adjustment, prices will be divided into a four tiered pricing structure. The four tiers will be Regular, Regular Plus, Peak and Peak Plus.

5.  Busch Gardens files plans for possible new attraction

A project codenamed “Project Jethro” has plans filed with the Southwest Florida Water Management District for a 1.83-acre project area involving demolition, grading and drainage work around where the former Rhino Rally queue once stood.
 

6.  Kuwait seeks global firms for Entertainment City mega project

The mega-scale tender seeks to locate the right partners to undertake planning, development, execution, operation, maintenance and investment in the project which forms part of Kuwait Vision 2035.
 

7.  DENO’S WONDER WHEEL OWNERS EXPANDING INTO DILAPIDATED AMUSEMENT PARK

The owners of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park have purchased a run-down corner of Coney Island’s amusement district, and the thrill purveyors are currently planning on how to reinvigorate the area with new attractions — without stepping on any toes. 

8.  Chinese couple detained for five days after taking nude photos on children’s amusement park ride

A man and woman from southern China who took pornographic photos and videos at a children’s amusement park on New Year’s Eve and published them online were given five days in detention, authorities said on Monday.
 

9.  Disney World's 'free dining' offer is back - here's how to get it

Disney's got three offers on the table for families thinking about a trip to the Orlando theme parks. First up is the return of Disney's "free dining" deal, which includes either the Disney Dining Plan or Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan (depending upon which class of hotel you book) on five-night, sic-day vacation packages booked through Disney.

10.  Universal: Annual passholders get own entrance to theme parks

Universal Orlando’s annual passholders have a new perk. For the month of January, they will be able to enter Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure through turnstiles dedicated to them at the theme parks’ entrances.

Greetings, space travelers! As you enter the world of tomorrow, you might have seen a bit of construction going on by the entrance over the past few months. Right by Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Star Tours, we’ve seen construction occurring on these two walls. Today, the wall by Star Tours has been revealed and it’s a sight to behold!

12.  Sleep next to the roller coaster: Efteling offers one-off overnight stays in the amusement park in 2020

In 2020, three winners can spend the night in extraordinary locations, directly in the Efteling amusement park - for example on the deck of the water roller coaster "De vliegende Hollander".

13.  Take peek at more details from Disney’s new Epcot eatery

The Walt Disney Co. has been building a new theme park barbecue restaurant at Epcot's American Adventure pavilion that is themed after the patriotic Muppet, Sam Eagle.

14.  Height and top speed of new roller coaster Efteling announced

The new roller coaster in Efteling will not be an attraction for the daredevil. Family roller coaster Max & Moritz - a double powered coaster - is only six meters high. The amusement park has announced this today. The top speed will be 36 kilometers per hour.

1.  Topgolf preps for an IPO that could be valued at $4 billion

Topgolf has taken a big step toward an initial public offering of stock with the hiring of investment bankers to help it through the process this year.  The Dallas-based company is working with JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley, according to a source familiar with the matter. The IPO could be valued at $4 billion, the source confirmed.

2.  Mountainous museum complex to rise next to world's longest canal

High-profile firm Herzog & de Meuron has revealed plans for an eye-catching new museum complex in Hangzhou, China. Inspired by the world's longest canal, it will feature a mountain-like building at its center and will be defined by a glazed facade that's meant to bring to mind a river.

3.  Flight simulator This is Holland: new director, higher visitor numbers

The Amsterdam attraction This is Holland ended 2019 with an increase in the number of visitors. More than 280,000 visitors entered the flight simulator, which opened in the fall of 2017. That is 85,000 more than in 2018. Furthermore, since 1 January the tourist attraction has officially a new general manager.

4.  New Ultimate Entertainment Destination in Near the Woodlands

SHENANDOAH, TX -– On January 20, 2019 Dave & Buster’s will open its doors to its 136th location at the upscale Metropark Square in Shenandoah. The ultimate entertainment destination will feature a 40,000 square feet venue filled with excitement, including top of the line arcade games, a chef-crafted menu filled with options for all dietary restrictions, innovative drinks, and a state-of-the-art D&B Sports Bar surrounded with dozens of massive HDTVs.

5.  KidZania organizes World Fair to celebrate the world culture

New Delhi: KidZania, the global edutainment theme park, has organized a special World Fair to celebrate the beginning of 2020. The World fair will be on till 15th January 2020. KidZania consciously promotes multi cultures and invites one and all to come, participate and experience the beauty and brilliance of the variety of cultures across the world and feel one with the World. KidZania also enhances the sports spirit of the nation by partnering up with Decathlon to celebrate ‘Sports for all’.

6.  Laser tag and VR arcade opens in Meadowbrook Mall

A new business in the Meadowbrook Mall is bringing something different to Harrison County.  Planet X opened its doors only a couple weeks ago, and offers a variety of activities for kids and families.

7.  Seasoned Franchise Veteran Mike Rotondo Named CEO Of Dallas-Based Altitude Trampoline Park

PRNewswire -- NRD Capital, a private equity firm headquartered in Atlanta, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Rotondo as CEO of Altitude Trampoline Park effective immediately.  Rotondo brings extensive franchise and brand building experience to the global family entertainment company, headquartered in Southlake, Texas. 

8.  Indoor miniature golf course named Stroke opens soon in Plaza Midwood

An indoor miniature golf course and midcentury-modern lounge named Stroke is targeting a soft opening on Thursday, January 16 (tickets). The 5,100-square-foot facility is located Plaza Midwood near the new Bohemian Wine Bar.

9.  TreeTop Family Adventure closing its doors

After nearly a decade of business, TreeTop Family Adventure located off Dunnavant Valley Road off U.S. 280 will be closing its doors.  The family entertainment facility, which features indoor activities such as laser tag, a laser maze and arcade games, as well as outdoor activities including go karts and miniature golf, has announced it will cease operation Sunday, Jan. 12.

10.  Broken Arrow Go-Kart, VR facility closing indefinitely

An indoor Go-Kart track and virtual reality center in Broken Arrow is closing indefinitely.  In a Facebook post, Xtreme Racing and Entertainment announced January 19th will be the last day open. The business will be closed indefinitely as of January 20th. 
Waterpark / Aquatics News

1.  Welcome to Rulantica: Europa-Park’s second gate that is more than just a water park

Europa-Park’s brand new Rulantica water world is now open to the public, with 25 water attractions including 17 slides, over a 32,600 square metre venue.  The opening of Rulantica finished off a busy 2019 for the popular German theme park.

2.  Waco council to vote on $500,000 deal for new Hawaiian Falls features

Waco City Council will vote Tuesday night on a lease abatement worth up to $500,000 to help Hawaiian Falls Water Park build a new play structure with 12 water slides.

3.  Scottsdale’s Great Wolf Lodge offering daily passes for indoor water park

Here’s some good news for the new year if you’ve been wanting to play at Arizona’s first water park resort without springing for a room.  Great Wolf Lodge, which opened in Scottsdale in September, is now offering daily passes for its indoor heated water park facilities.

4.  Spiraling five-storey mega-slide to open in Six Flags

Six Flags White Water plans to open a five-storey waterslide this spring.  The attraction—Python Plunge—will feature multiple swirling discs, two-person rafts that race along a 152.4-m (500-ft) course and careen around giant saucer-shaped turns before sending guests plunging 15.24 m (50 ft) into the pool below.
Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  Minnesota Zoo planning new ways to connect visitors to nature

The Minnesota Zoo is proposing a dramatic new vision for the 41-year-old attraction, aiming to connect visitors to the natural world through camping opportunities, a nature-based preschool and adventure rope courses rather than new exotic animal exhibits.

2.  Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden euthanized a 22-year-old white lion, Prosperity

A 22-year-old white lion was euthanized Monday by Cincinnati zoo officials, according to a statement made on Facebook by the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden.  Zoo officials say Prosperity, the lion, had age-related health issues. Veterinarians have been monitoring her quality of life for several months and observed a decrease in mobility. 

3.  Gorilla At San Diego Zoo Safari Park​ Undergoes Cataract Surgery

Animal care specialists at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and health professionals at UC San Diego Health recently worked together to save a young gorilla's eyesight.  Leslie, a 3-year-old western lowland gorilla at the Safari Park, developed a cataract in her left eye. Animal care specialists confirmed her lens had changed and the eye was shifting haphazardly, causing the gorilla to favor her right eye.

4.  Calgary Zoo prepares for young pandas' departure

Two giant panda siblings are now spending their last days in Calgary before heading to China.  On Monday, Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue were making the most of their dwindling time at the Calgary Zoo, despite the frosty temperatures, said spokeswoman Alison Archambault.

5.  San Antonio Zoo working to help Australian wildlife

Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, is calling on Spurs player Patty Mills to join him in the efforts to send help to Australia to help care for the animals impacted by the ongoing wildfires.  Dante Fenolio, vice president of conservation and research for the zoo, said they haven’t heard from Mills yet, but the plan to send help is in the works.

6.  First glimpse of adorable six-month-old koala peeking out of its mother’s pouch at Edinburgh Zoo

Keepers have captured the first footage of a six-month old koala born at Edinburgh Zoo as it starts to look out of its mother's pouch.  The tiny creature, which is native to Australia, is seen moving around at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo.  The marsupial was born on July 13 at the wildlife conservation charity to mother Alinga and father Tanami.

7.  Zoo visitor faces losing her arm after she was mauled by a jaguar when she got too close to its cage to 'take a selfie'

A zoo visitor faces having her arm amputated after she reportedly crossed a security line to take a selfie with a caged jaguar.  The animal managed to attack Noemi Rosas Fragoza, 30, from the central Mexican state of Puebla, in front of shocked onlookers.  She was visiting the Zoologico Bio Zoo in Córdoba, Veracruz, Mexico, when she reportedly got too close to the jaguar while attempting to take a selfie.

8.  Two surviving monkeys from deadly German zoo fire 'doing well'

Two chimpanzees who survived a fire which killed 30 monkeys on New Year's Eve at the Krefeld zoo are doing well under medical care, reported the zoo on Monday.  There was a shock on New Year’s Eve when an accidental fire caused by sky lanterns took the lives of nearly all animals at Krefeld’s zoo in western Germany.

9.  Detroit Zoo turns poo into electricity

t the Detroit Zoo, giraffes, rhinos, and zebras not only fascinate visitors – they also generate what the zoo calls “poo power.”  “Animal manure is very usable. It has a lot of energy in it,” says Manager of Sustainability Rachel Handbury.  In 2017, the zoo became the first in the country to convert animal waste to clean energy.

10.  Criticism Mounts At SeaQuest Aquarium At Woodbridge Center Mall

Except Covino's hands-on policy is getting some major backlash. Ever since SeaQuest first opened, in early December, groups of animal rights activists have been holding protests every weekend outside the Woodbridge Center Mall. They are demanding the state shut SeaQuest down.
Tourism / Other News

1.  American Dream, Mall of America's Jersey sibling is 90% leased

The past year has been a bit of a nightmare for many shopping mall owners, with anchor retailers exiting left and right. But that doesn't seem to be the case with American Dream, the newest megamall from Triple Five Group, the development group that also owns of Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

2.  Florida's highway welcome centers no longer give tourists free orange juice

The orange, and the liquid goodness squeezed from each one, are symbols of Florida, land of the perpetual citrus harvest. That's why some state welcome centers once gave out complimentary orange juice, greeting visitors the Florida roads with an OJ toast.

3.  Travelers Are Wasting as Much as One Full Day of Their Vacations

According to the South West News Service, the study commissioned by Sykes Holiday Cottages found that around 25 percent of respondents waste too much of their vacation time trying to figure out what to do next.

4.  CES gadget show: Surveillance is in — and in a big way

Nestled in the “smart home” and “smart city” showrooms at the sprawling Las Vegas consumer tech conference are devices that see, hear and track the people they encounter. Some of them also analyze their looks and behavior. The technology on display includes eyelid-tracking car dashboard cameras to prevent distracted driving and “rapid DNA” kits for identifying a person from a cheek swab sample.
