39th Ward Alderman Sam Nugent

COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER
January 9, 2019

Happy 2020, neighbors.

I'm proud to share what our team has been able to achieve since I took office in May.

To start, our office has submitted almost 10,000 Service requests on behalf of the 39th Ward.

We welcomed Jesus House USA, Lamassu Youth Center, and the Aden Center.

We opened a public art installation at the Albany Park Library.

We moved offices in October from 4404 W. Lawrence to 4200 W. Lawrence to make room for the expansion of the Mayfair library, which was adjacent to our old office. What a great reason to move!
In fact, we moved 2 blocks east on Lawrence Avenue to the space that once housed the previous Mayfair library up until July 1, 1996. Come by and visit us in the new space soon, if you haven't already.

We've welcomed new businesses to the ward:

We made many improvements to our community spaces, including . . .

The Chicago Police Board conducted three community listening sessions as a part of their search for Chicago’s next Police Superintendent. One session was held here in the 39th Ward at the Muslim Community Center on Elston.

I joined northwest side residents to hear about the process from the Police Board and to voice ideas and concerns as the city looks for Chicago’s next top cop.

Community Highlights

I was honored to join Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi to help residents learn how to appeal your property taxes.

It is always such a pleasure to meet with North Park Village residents. I spent time in the J. Michael Fitzgerald building talking with folks prior to the holidays and listening to their hopes for the New Year.

It was a delight to stop by the 17th Police District’s Holiday Party and snap a picture with Commander Pontecore! Thank you to all of our hard-working officers in the 17th District.

Your Participatory Budgeting Committee continues their work to build a Ward budget centered around the community's voice. They will be announcing details about our Ward Budget Vote soon.

The Edgebrook Sauganash Chamber of Commerce Holiday Party was a beautiful evening celebrating the business and community accomplishments of the north end of the 39th Ward. Thank you to Wintrust Bank of Sauganash for hosting the event and to Jenny Herren for her ongoing work.

2020 CENSUS

Partnering for an Accurate Count

Chicago Mayor's Office has announced a strategic initiative to distribute $500,000 in funding for community-based organizations to assist the City in educating and engaging residents about the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census.

Working in partnership with Forefront’s IL Count Me In 2020 program, the City will allocate grant funding to several community organizations to support an effective and comprehensive census outreach strategy focused on ensuring a complete and accurate count.

These grant funds will be used to support targeted community outreach and other initiatives to help increase participation for historically-undercounted communities.

CITY SERVICES

Yard Waste Collection

The City of Chicago coordinates bagged leaf and other yard waste collection to assist residents in clearing their yards, parkways and storm drains of leaf debris.

Please call our office, 773.736.5594 or call 311 to request a separate yard waste collection.

Yard waste should be left in the alley or at the curb for collection, and bagged separately from garbage in the black cart and separately from recycling in the blue.

Yard waste bags will be collected based on 311 requests and then taken to be composted.

Yard waste consists of leaves, grass clippings, branches, brush, clippings from shrubbery, and garden waste. Yard waste does not include dirt, rocks, or gravel.
