Bike culture events next week!

Happy new year!

There's no better way to ring in 2020, we think, than to celebrate biking with a series of fun gatherings! Read on for details on THREE such public events happening this week...
"Wadjda" Film on Jan. 14!
Best Foreign Film Nominee at the 2014 BAFTA Film Awards
Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh (99% with 118 critic reviews)

Wadjda is a young girl growing up in Riyadh who enters a Quran recitation contest determined to win enough money to buy her heart’s desire: a green bicycle. In a country at a time where bikes are seen as dangerous to the virtue of girls, cinemas are banned, and women cannot drive or vote, the story of Wadjda’s bike is the story of freedom and promise. Wadjda, the first film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, was written and directed by Haifaa Al Mansour, Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker.

Watch the trailer and buy tickets now! And then say that you'll be there on Facebook!

Bonus event: Visit the Commons Kitchen at 124 E State/MLK St before the film for dinner or a snack. Saudi Arabian dishes will be offered as a special on this night!

"Wadjda" showing at Cinemapolis Tues., Jan. 14 at 7pm. The Commons Kitchen will have Saudi Arabian dinner specials available earlier in the evening.

An evening of bike culture with Ayleen Crotty
Thurs., Jan 16, 5:30–8 PM at the Ithaca Quaker Meetinghouse
Cost: FREE, RSVP recommended for light dinner and childcare requests

Enjoy a light dinner and lively discussion with bike culture extraordinaire Ayleen Crotty, founder of the Filmed by Bike Film Festival and other creative events that have made bicycling part of the culture of Portland, Ore.

This event is FREE, but we appreciate RSVPs by Mon., Jan 13 for food and childcare needs. Check out the Facebook event for more and to say you'll be there!

We will learn about what it means to have a vibrant bike culture, look at all that we have in Ithaca, and participate in a collaborative exercise to create more bike fun locally. At 8 PM, join us on an (optional) ride to a local bar to keep the conversation brewing. To get the juices flowing, check out Ayleen's work beforehand!

"Filmed by Bike" founder Ayleen Crotty will join us next week to kick bike culture into high gear in Ithaca!

Bike Walk Tompkins is delighted to help the Sciencenter community discover new ways to make regular living more sustainable, and more fun! The petting zoo opens at 9 AM for Sciencenter Members, and at 10 AM for general admission. If you have a cargo bike or a cargo system-on-a-bike and want to show it off, email us to get involved.

Be sure to say you're going on Facebook... and learn more about the exhibit, GEAR UP: The Science of Bikes.

Join us at the Sciencenter the morning of Jan. 18 for a cargo bike petting zoo!

E-bike bill stalls in Albany
Governor Andrew Cuomo vetoed a bill at the end of the 2019 state legislative session that would have legalized e-scooters and e-bikes in New York. In doing so, he cited an absence of safety regulations as a major reason for his veto. The bill will likely, however, gain new life in some form in the coming months. Bike Walk Tompkins will continue to monitor this situation, advocating as and when appropriate, and will keep you updated. For more information, see this Ithaca Voice article.
