2020 Traveller Series and Nationals

First Traveller Series event for 2020 is set for April 4-5 at Napier Sailing Club.
It's a slightly early start to the series but we had to go with the first weekend in April to avoid School Holidays, Easter and ANZAC that are all crammed into April.

The 2020 Nationals will be held at Sandspit Yacht Club mid May 2020. Full details will be coming out soon and we will also have the other Traveller Series info released as it comes to hand. Just waiting for a few people to be back from holiday breaks and making sure we work around other events as best we can.

So make sure Napier and Sandspit are in your calendar. There are some experienced crew available for the Napier regatta if you think you might be short and we will get accommodation suggestions, sailing instructions out closer to the events.

Round North Island (RNI the E5.9 perspective)

With a number of E5.9 sailors involved in the upcoming 2020 RNI, we thought it was a good chance to report on some of the action. Following is a brief overview of the E5.9 Retro's boys delivery trip up on their Ross 40 Satellite Spy to the Bay of Islands as well as an overview of the other E5.9 2020 RNI race participants

Delivery for RNI 2020 – a “Retro” perspective

While most of us were chilling out on holiday after seeing in a new decade, our fellow E5.9 competitors from Retro – Matt Kerr and Craig Smith – embarked on a quick and wild delivery trip on their modified Ross 40 “Satellite Spy” for a spot of summer racing in the Bay of Islands Sailing Week before the Round North Island Two-Handed Race 2020 edition.

Delivery
Departing Thursday January 2nd from Waikawa in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island with a windy ride up the West Coast of the North Island over the top and down the East Coast into the Bay of Islands on the morning of Sunday January 5 celebrated with a fantastic sunrise.

Crew

Matt Kerr, Craig Smith, Glenn (Robbo) Robertson, Craig Greenwood and Pierre the tiller pilot.
Journey
Waikawa Marina, Marlborough Sounds to Opua, Bay of Islands – approx. 555nm.

Quote from Matt:

"We never intended to sail in such crap conditions but the front came through faster and wider than forecast and instead of being in front of it we were in it for two days."

A text update on the Saturday from Matt giving a first-hand account of the delivery live:
Hi all, a quick update from the Spy delivery trip. Now closing in on Cape Reinga, been reaching in 20ish knots with easing seas. Hope to be around in around seven hours. First 30 hours or so were pretty ugly, 30 - 40+ hard on the wind in pretty big seas. Once we got around Taranaki we were able to crack off a bit but still in plenty of breeze and sea. Smithy reckons the BOI crew owe us big time!!
Boats been awesome as has Pierre (auto helm) crew are also all good although a few have feed the fish a bit! Our track is on PredictWind tracker and Marine Tracker. Hope to be in early tomorrow morning. Cheers

RNI2020 – Round North Island To-Handed Race February 2020

Smithy and Matt have an RNI under their belts having completed the RNI 2017 together on the “Spy” and are looking forward to the challenge of the latest event.
This year will host 80 Sailors, 40 Boats, 4 Legs, 1270+ Nautical Miles, and an amazing team of supporters following the race. The calibre of the crews and boats will mean some tight racing and some epic competition.

There are a heap of other current and recent E5.9 sailors that we know are competing in this year’s RNI (noted below),  and I am sure that many of us will be perched on the edge of our seats tracking online what is expected to be a highly competitive event.

Sooty & Satty - Craig Satterthwaite & Nathan Williams on “Mr Kite” a Cape 40 canter
Chris Hornell and daughter Bex Hornell on the TP52 “Kia Kaha”
Casey Bellingham on “Titanium” a Stomp 38 by Steve Thompson
Rodney Keenan on “Laissez Faire”, a Beneteau 47.7
Brett Elliott on “Waka” a Thompson 850
Jamie Logan and Steve Maire on “Clockwork” a Bakewell-White 37
Scott Wilson on “Krakatoa Racing II”, a Pogo 40
(apologies if we have missed anyone out!?)

All the best.
Fair Winds, Fast Miles and Safe Sailing

E5.9 Moulds

Getting the E5.9 Moulds down to Sam in Picton is still a work in progres. Any transport options seem to be outside our current budget so we may be needing to plan a road trip to get them there. This may require a bit of a combined effort to get them down there in a relay fashion.

If you have any contacts or ideas, let us know because the sooner they are there the sooner we can tidy them up and make sure they remain in good condition ready for the next lot of hulls

Boat Database

The E5.9 Boat database is currently getting updated.
We currently have list of 60 NZ E5.9s. While we have quite a bit of information already we are trying to locate and update as much of the detail as we can. Once it is sorted it will be shared via the newsletter and posted on our website.

Hopefully it will be a good resource to help keep the boats active and the owners and crews involved in the class going ons.
