In Germany, shortly before New Year's Eve, people typically wish each other "Guten Rutsch," which literally translates as "have a good slide." Many linguistics, however, claim that it has nothing to do with "sliding". The expression could thus have come into German via the Yiddish for “a good beginning” – as in “Rosh Hashanah,” the Jewish New Year.
