New year, new newsletter

It’s a new year, so it’s a natural time to make ourselves over.

Starting next week we will be adding some features to this newsletter, such as the best deals we find during the week, feedback from our readers, and tips on how to get the most out of our recommended products. We will continue to send you our top blogs of the week and updates to guides. Also next week, look for the latest updates on our guides to touchscreen winter gloves and Thunderbolt 3 docks, and a new guide to the best purse organizers.

And we have even more in the works for early this year. We are planning some new emails that will showcase the work and the people who make Wirecutter the best reviews website. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at our testing. You’ll get to know our staff (and the products they love). And we’ll also pay homage to Wirecutter-approved products that have stood the test of time—the Hydro Flask 21oz Standard Mouth, for example, has been our top pick for the best water bottle after more than 120 hours of research spanning six years, with over 90 bottles tested.

Don’t worry. We’re not going to spam you or send more than three emails a week. In the meantime, we want to hear from you. Respond to this email to let us know what we should review and what you want to see in your inbox in 2020.

Our recommendations

  • We recently tested 23 different laptop tote bags, and we commuted with our favorites for two weeks around New York City. Our top bags include this Matt & Nat ABBI Tote Bag, for the minimalist commuter, and the Bellroy Tokyo Tote – Premium, a casual-looking bag to protect your laptop. Most of our testers want a bag that zips entirely shut—to stop things from falling out and from falling in. We’ll post the full guide to our favorite laptop tote bags later this month.
  • After testing 12 new models and retesting our picks for the best tire inflators, we’ve again named the Viair 77P as our top pick. The DeWalt 20V Max Inflator is our new upgrade pick. You can use the DeWalt Max Inflator cordlessly, with the same 20V Max battery used in other DeWalt tools, or you can plug it into a car’s 12-volt port or a household AC outlet.

No, You Shouldn’t Just Get an Automatic Pet Feeder and Skip Town

Fess up: Who here has left their cat for a night with a giant bowl of food and returned to find a chewed-up piece of something important as vengeance? An automatic pet feeder isn’t a replacement for a pet sitter. But it’ll do in a pinch for a short period.
