All I wanted for Christmas was an ice maker.
For many years, I’ve lived alone.
There was never a problem with ice during this period, even with kids in the house.
I had a system.
I would take ice cubes from one tray while the other sat freezing.
When tray #1 was empty, I filled it with water and switched them.
My ice system was perfect.
About a year ago, this all changed.
The children invented the notion that they were able to get their own ice cubes.
It was around this time that the system began to break down.
“Dad! We’re out of ice!”
I instructed them in the ice system.
It didn’t seem to matter.
We kept running out of ice because the system was being operated by people who didn’t appreciate the beautiful simplicity and bountifulness of what we had.
I realized that the problems would likely continue until the children matured or moved out.
The prospect of 8-10 years of ice shortages was a scary one.
I decided to automate the process.
I asked Santa for an ice maker.
Problem solved.
What issues do you have with systems in your small business?
