Transition Café

Make Do and Mend. The meeting is on 8th January at the Quaker Meeting House, School Lane, Liverpool, beginning at 6.30 for soup, deserts, etc, and then the mending session begins after 7pm.
Bring clothes that need mending, your darning, knitting and crochet and enjoy an evening of renovating your clothing and enjoying a bring and share meal and a social evening.  We will provide sewing machines, needles and thread, knitting and crochet basic materials, buttons and needlework sundries and we can all share our expertise. We know now that the clothing industry is one of the major polluters and many people are turning to more sustainable ways of managing clothing. Buying charity shop garments, hiring clothes or clothes swap sessions are all sustainable ways of getting new clothes and you are also invited to bring garments which you no longer wear for our clothes swap corner.
If you don't have any making or mending to do just come along for the shared meal and a chat over a hot drink.

Unbroken Ground25-min YouTube video with very good responses
Unbroken Grounds explains the critical role food will play in the next frontier of our efforts to solve the environmental crisis. It explores four areas of agriculture that aim to change our relationship to the land and oceans. Most of our food is produced using methods that reduce biodiversity, decimate soil and contribute to climate change. We believe our food can and should be a part of the solution to the environmental crisis – grown, harvested and produced in ways that restore our land, water and wildlife.

Growing Sudley CIC are having their annual winter gathering next weekend on Sunday 12 January 1-3pm.
The project has been active and growing for the last few years, developing a therapeutic gardening and nature therapy project in a dilapidated walled garden at Sudley Estate. They run children’s forest-school holiday clubs and projects for people with long term health conditions and disabilities, as well as a variety of community events and activities. The project aims to bring the walled garden back to life and enhance community health and wellbeing through nature. The group have developed their practice using a permaculture ethos and are actively using the approach, not just in design and growing, but as a tool for organisational development.
Growing Sudley are closely connected to the Transition Movement and invite you to join them at their winter gathering, for mulled fireside drinks and activities for all ages. Dress warmly and bring a cup if you can !
The walled garden is at the far end of Sudley Estate (NOT inside Sudley House), Mossley Hill Rd, L18 8BX, next to the bottom car park.

Support for community businesses in Liverpool City Region. – Major downloadable PDF report
In summer 2019, Power to Change commissioned "Capacity" to research the support needed, and available, to the community business sector in Liverpool City Region; community businesses are socially trading organisations. This report details the findings. It also includes recommendations for providing the sector with better support than is currently available, with a consistent approach across types of organisation and their geography in the City Region. The term ‘community business support’ refers to the advice and guidance that is needed for a community business to grow and develop. This can involve a number of elements, such as business planning, financial management, peer-support, professional skills, mentorship and leadership (including programmes) and more. Financial support for community businesses is outside the scope of this research and report.

Effective altruism is about answering one simple question: how can we use our resources to help others the most? Rather than just doing what feels right, we use evidence and careful analysis to find the very best causes to work on.

Progress for Europe Climate LawEcologist article
‘Green Deal’ seeks to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
The project has been spearheaded by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whose presidential tenure began recently on 1 December 2019. The central thrust of the Green Deal is a relentless momentum towards making the EU climate neutral by 2050.
It marries up formal political-legal EU ambition with the international Paris Agreement, where average global temperature rise is to be kept well below 2℃.
This headline intention of the Green Deal is a pioneering “European Climate Law” – one of the most innovative legal regimes ever seriously proposed in the history of environmental law, which intends to deliver the world’s first climate-neutral continent.

Climate Justice Action in Germany (XR could learn from this) – Ecologist article
Four thousand people shut down key points of coal infrastructure in the east of Germany at the second “Ende Gelände” of this year, which took place on 30 November. Ende Gelände means ‘here and no further,’  and the mass climate justice movement was successful in blocking three train tracks that take coal from the mines to the power stations and three major open-cast coal mines in the region. The thousands of people were divided into ‘fingers’ each with a different remit and target to block. People used their strength in numbers, determination and wit to overwhelm police lines and occupy key points of coal infrastructure to stop the circulation of fossil capital.

Fuel banks. If someone needs help with fuel bills, new Fuel Banks are being set up. There is a national scheme developing – see this website for more information
Individuals that use a pre-payment meter and that are on a low income can receive help from a Fuel Bank. They will need a referral in order to apply for a grant. This can come from social workers, food banks, welfare advice agencies, or even GPs. Local councils can also link a resident to a Fuel Bank in their district. Sadly, not all the food banks and not all the energy companies are involved yet. But, it may be worth a try !

About Transition Liverpool
The main Transition Liverpool event is the monthly “Transition Café” which is on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Every October we put on a full-day Symposium. Our main concerns are to help create a “soft-landing” rather than a crash as fuel supplies fall and demand rises, and also as the effects of climate change increase. Transition is a development model for “advanced” societies to help us create better and more fulfilled lives for all, while using less resources.
We are part of the Transition Network, and Transition Town West Kirby are also very active. Our local Liverpool website is here, and our Facebook page is here.
Some of the main Transition publications are available online for free download - the original Transition Handbook, and the more recent Essential Guide to doing Transition .
