THE GUIDES ASSOCIATION OF NYC presents:

THE GANYC E-NEWS BLAST

GANYC formally rang in the New Year and closed out the holidays this past Monday night at our annual post-holiday party, at Novotel in Times Square. Thank you to all who came and celebrated with us!

We also had our first membership meeting of the year last week, at the New-York Historical Society. We had an amazing turnout (over 130 people!), and we are humbled by your enthusiasm. We hope this is just the beginning of a great year for GANYC, as we keep working to serve our membership and the travel community in New York.

This year, we will be having numerous fam tours (many upcoming winter ones are sold out, so keep an eye out for more in the Spring), more PDPs such as our upcoming one on taxes & finances, networking happy hours, new member orientation sessions, another round of our certification course, and much more.

Our next big event will be for International Tourist Guides Day, on February 21st. Starting at 10am, we will be hosted by MOCA (Museum of Chinese in America). We will have a dim-sum breakfast at the museum, followed by guest speakers and other events. More details to be officially announced soon, but please save the date!

And of course we will have the GANYC Apple Awards on March 2!

Finally, some housekeeping: while we are still taking/processing membership renewals, please note that for the remainder of this fiscal year, renewals for lapsed members must include a $15 late fee, for a total of $14o.

For those members seeking to purchase liability insurance for 2020, the information and purchase link can be found: here (members must be logged in to the GANYC.org site to view this page). After purchase, the Insurance Committee will send you the certificate within the week. Payments made after January 31 will incur a late fee.
And don't forget to check out the GANYC Announcement page, discussion forums, blog, and social sites to stay on top of all the happenings in the NYC tour world.

Morris-Jumel Mansion Fam Tour
with Alan Cohen

The Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest house in Manhattan with a fascinating story to tell. Constructed in 1765 by a retired British Colonel, Roger Morris, and his wealthy American wife, Mary Phillipse, the house became George Washington’s headquarters for five weeks in September 1776. French merchant, Stephen Jumel, and his American wife, Eliza, bought the house in 1810 and restored it in a Second Empire style. The 250+ year history of the house includes stories about Mary Phillipse, New York’s “it girl” in the 1750s, George Washington and his first cabinet, Hessians, a rags-to-riches story, Aaron Burr, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and much more. Join Alan Cohen, who is a docent at the Mansion, for a 90-minute tour including both the outside of the Mansion and three floors on the interior. GANYC members will also be greeted by the Mansion’s Director of Visitor Services.

Grand Central Terminal Revisited
with Joe Svehlak

Grand Central Terminal is at the top of list of Joe Svehlak's favorite places. For several years, he was one of the Municipal Art Society principal guides here on their free weekly walks before they switched to the current docent-led tours.

Take an in-depth tour of this iconic building as Joe shares insights gathered over the years about the art, the stone work, and the restoration. This can be a mutual learning experience about taking large groups in and around the Terminal as we revisit Grand Central's special places and share its secrets.

The tour should be fun and a learning experience since Grand Central is such a wonderful place on many levels: art, architecture, planning and preservation, and the history of railroading in NYC.

Year of the Rat: Chinatown Fam Tour

Come join GANYC members on a 2-hour walking tour leading up to the celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year (the Year of the Rat), as we explore the area in and around NYC's oldest Chinatown. We'll uncover how various cultures and communities have shaped one of the top tourist destinations in the Big Apple by discussing the physical geography of the neighborhood, urban planning, and U.S. immigration policies along the route. Participants will discover how and why Chinese-Americans came to inhabit the area known as Chinatown and how residents celebrate the Lunar New Year. Beginning at Foley Square, we'll look closely at the architecture, public art, and commercial establishments of the neighborhood to uncover the legacy of not only Chinese culture on NYC but African, Egyptian, Irish, Italian, and Jewish cultural legacies as well.

Keeping Off Midtown Streets:
East Side-- Grand Central Terminal to Bloomingdales

with Jack Eichenbaum

In the "post-modernist era", NYC planning principles encouraged innovative new public spaces to be maintained by private entities. These new spaces typically offer shelter and shortcuts and add to the connections already provided by transit, stores, and hotels. These walks, particularly when offered in cold weather months, beat winter by connecting public atriums,  passageways, building lobbies, and walkways that reveal a more intimate side of Midtown.

Islamic Galleries: Love, History & Highlights of the Metropolitan Museum's Newest Renovation
with Alice Hunsberger, PhD
Shortly after 9/11, perhaps when we needed them most, the Metropolitan Museum closed its famed Islamic Galleries in 2003 for a 4-year planned renovation. Delays doubled those years to 2011, when the stunningly rethought galleries opened to universal acclaim.
Join Dr. Alice Hunsberger, PhD, professor of Islamic Studies, author of two books on Persian poetry by a medieval traveler, GANYC member since 2018 and a paid Met Museum Islamic galleries guide, as she explores the history of the treasures on view. As a specialist on Islamic literature and history, Alice provides rich context for both the art itself and the historical evolution of the Met’s Islamic galleries. For this tour, she will recount several classic love stories, both secular and sacred, which are illustrated in bowls, tiles and paintings that could be easily missed amid the overwhelming dazzle and variety of artwork on display.
From its first acquisition in 1871, to today, the Metropolitan Museum has collected, researched, preserved and displayed outstanding art from the Islamic world. During the Great Depression, Met curators even led their own archeological excavations in Iran, and then exhibited the finds in 1937 within months of their discovery. Over these 150 years, the continued expansion of their collection both through purchases and donations, as well as enthusiastic demands of donors and the public, led the Museum to frequently revise its gallery presentations. However, before the grand reopening in 2011, no renovation to the Islamic galleries had been undertaken since 1975, and thousands of masterpieces remained in storage.
Today, while organized both geographically and chronologically, the Islamic galleries have been officially rebranded as The Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia and Later South Asia, a new title that reflects current political and scholarly concerns. The many doorways of the 15 galleries allow the visitor to fully experience the interconnectedness and diversity of cultures spanning from Spain to India and across seven centuries.

The Ecology of Penn Station
with Jack Eichenbaum

Constructed in a once squalid area of the city known as the "Tenderloin", Penn Station united rails and tunnels from Long Island, New Jersey, and points south that previously terminated on the other side of the East River or Hudson. We'll walk through the remnants of the neighborhood's past and discuss its proposed future. Includes navigating through transportation connectivity inside the station and the Pennsylvania Hotel and the New Yorker Hotel built with proximity to the station. We will also visit the Farley Post Office Building (planned as the new Amtrak station), explore links to department stores, Herald and Greeley Squares, and Koreatown.

Secrets in Stone: Green-Wood Cemetery Fam Tour
arranged by Joe Svehlak

Join Green-Wood Cemetery's Allison C. Meier for a wonderful fam tour.

There is a secret language at Green-Wood that's etched upon the monuments: cemetery symbology. Learn the meaning of the inverted torch, bales of wheat, and an hourglass with wings, along with those that are a bit more difficult to decipher. This eye-opening walking tour will showcase the meaning of these eternal, but sometimes cryptic, images.

Afterwards, Joe Svehlak will lead an hour informal walk for those who would like to join him.
