From the President
My word for 2020 is "Mindfulness". Like many of you I want to be more mindful and focused in my art journey. Busy schedules and life in general are often a challenge but being mindful of what we wish to accomplish can help us to progress and reach our art goals. Here's to a new year and new decade filled with many Blessings!
HAPPY 2020

I would like to introduce you to Suzy 'Pal' Powell. She is an amazing artist and teacher. She has won countless awards in a variety of mediums and styles. I was totally captivated when I was first introduced to her art - "The Rodeo Clown". She used torn paper. She loves to paint old rusty trucks, Christmas cards in watercolor, wild colorful portraits, houses, bicycles, doodles... I could go on and on. Suzy shares her talent and knowledge in the classes that she teaches in her studio - "The Backyard Gallery". Suzy is also member of the Artists of Texas.
Please visit her BLOG, FACEBOOK PAGE, and her WEBSITE.
Her motto is
"It's Only Paper and Paint!
Not a matter of Life or Death... Just enjoy the process!"
Musings from a WTWS Member – Suzy 'PAL' Powell
When a man has put a limit
On what he will do,
He has put a limit
On what he can do.
I don’t know who said This, but it can relate to us as artists.
This is a new year with new chances and choices! May we all make a commitment to spending time in our ‘world’ with our paint with hopes for getting better in 2020. My prayer for us all is to not settle into a comfort zone, but challenging and pushing ourselves to learn more.
My motto for 2020 is
‘What If?’ What if I changed color paint or paper, and not make that piece of paper, canvas or sketchbook too precious. It’s just paper and paint! Experiment with it. I have found when i keep pushing it is better most of the time. If i ruin it,I’ve learned something!
Happy Painting/creating in 2020!

Judge’s Statement: WTWS Winter Show-
“What is Music to Your Soul?”
By Candace Keller, Ph.D.
I would say that this year’s show has a wonderful array of distinctive and beautiful subjects in an amazing range of styles! While many works spoke directly to the theme with people making or playing music, other interpretations were expressed in terms of favorite places or destinations, the joy of cooking or the pleasures of shopping, or simply rhythmic design elements dancing across the surface. There were a number of expressive and soulful portraits that captured my attention, and skillful, well considered compositions enhanced by strong watercolor and water media techniques.
Your organization has so many excellent water media artists, and your members support and encourage each other, which is the strength of any organization! I very much enjoyed seeing the exhibition and was only a bit frustrated that I didn’t have more awards to give, as there were many more deserving works! The particular works that I selected were pieces that spoke to my soul, and as you know, after all considerations of design, and color, techniques and artistic excellence, art impacts the individual on the soul level. Congratulations to all of you, and the beautiful artistic music you have made together.
Best, Candace Keller

"The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies was founded in 1974 by the New Mexico Watercolor Society through the foresight and work of Dr. David Gale (1915-1980). Today WFWS includes over 5000 artists in eleven societies. Our mission is to encourage and recognize artistic excellence and promote the visibility of watercolor in the West.
Our annual juried show is hosted each year by a different regional member society. We showcase works on paper created with a variety of water-based media. Membership in WFWS is automatic for any member of one of the eleven different regional societies. Signature membership may be awarded to any member whose work has been included in 3 WFWS Exhibitions."
WTWS has been a member of this auspicious organization since 1976 so let's keep up the tradition!

JANUARY DEMO BY AARON BROWN
Aaron Brown comes from a line of art teachers! Both of Aaron's grandmothers and her mother taught art. Growing up with art all around her, she developed a great appreciation for the arts, although she took a different career path.
Aaron has a degree in Ranch and Feedlot Management from Clarendon College and Horticulture from Tech. She does commercial lawn care for CCW Landscape.
On January 19th Aaron will present and give a demonstration on Bible Painting.
In her own words, "It's something l kind of stumbled on. I had seen a few done in acrylic but I wanted to try it in watercolor. I also do some mixed media inside the Bible as well."
I know we are all looking forward to seeing Aaron on January 19th!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
CETA CANYON RETREAT 2020
MARCH 22-27
It is time again to be thinking about Ceta Canyon Retreat. It is about 1 1/2 hours north of Lubbock, right in the middle of the canyon, where it is normal to see deer roaming through the campus. This year it will be held March 22-27. The minimum is 4 days for $276.00 (whether you stay two, three or four nights, the cost is still the same). You can come anytime during this time. Additional night is $69. There is a $50 deposit, due February 14, which will hold your spot. Total monies due March 6. There is no refund on deposit, and refund only on total monies for illness only. You can also just come and paint with us for the day, if you like, for $8.50--I will be sending out a detailed letter on what to bring for those that sign up, along with map and lodge layout.
Everyone will have their own private room with bath and or shower. We will be painting in a large meeting room -- we all have two 8ft tables, meaning you can bring everything, including the kitchen sink!!!!! Watermedia only please, no oils. Also, must be a WTWS member to attend.
It is a great time for fellowship, being creative, sharing ideas, having kind critiques in the evening and just doing what we all love to do---paint, paint, paint!!!!!

Do you have art supplies that you are not using and you would like to get rid of? Please consider donating them to the Guadalupe Community Center. The donations can be brought anytime we have a membership meeting or event. We've been doing this all along but most of our members don't know about it.
