JANUARY 2020
Welcome to 2020 at the Library!

I invite artists to consider submitting a proposal for displaying your work during the coming year. You can see details in this newsletter. Your proposal needn’t be in great detail, so I’m hoping no one will feel any time pressure to share it with us this month.

As we take a bit of a break from programs this month, I’d like to draw your attention to a couple of our smaller, newer collections. Some of you may have seen our ‘Zine bookshelf, which is located in the center aisle of the original reading room. Both the content and writing styles are quite varied. And if you have any suggestions for additions, please share them with us! Also, we have recently begun building a collection of plays and scripts. So far, we’re up to 124 titles. These were donated by Doug Bechtel and cataloged by volunteer Michael Armenia. You can find them in a small wooden bookcase at the opposite end of the same row of shelving as the ‘Zine collection, in the original reading room. Enjoy them just to read, or with an eye to a possible local drama production.

Also, I thought I’d share with you a quarterly journal, Into the Ruins, which publishes short fiction in a relatively new genre of science fiction, which nowadays encompasses a wide range of content from space opera to sword and sorcery to cyberpunk. This journal is in the genre called post-industrial fiction, which as the name implies deals with society after industrial civilization has gone away for any of a number of reasons. The authors show that the range of possible outcomes is a wide one! We have fourteen issues in our collection so far, shelved in the Science Fiction collection under its title.

Landscaping Work Day:  We are planning to schedule a work day in February to cut back some of our new grasses, installed by our landscaper Emily Aring. A hobbyist photographer, I’ve been snapping photos since childhood. I credit my older brother Jack with sparking my curiosity for image capture, my brother-in-law David for nurturing it, and my husband Tom for supporting it. Not fussy about equipment, I’ll  grab any old camera that’s handy to get the shot. Three photos in this exhibit were taken with a cell phone.

I like to think my compositions have improved over time, but you be the judge:
The Library is pleased to announce a new series based on the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions program. Join America's largest discussion series and be part of a nation-wide, non-partisan program intended to broaden public understanding and involvement in foreign affairs by investigating a range of contemporary foreign and domestic policy issues. 
 
The Discussion Group will meet at 6pm on the 4th Monday of each month from September 2019 to April 2020. Click here to download the 2019 schedule and details.  A limited amount of the series Briefing Books are available at the Library for $10. There is also a copy available for use only in the Library.

The Middle East: Regional Disorder
As the presidency of Donald J. Trump passes the halfway point, the Middle East remains a region in turmoil. The Trump administration has aligned itself with strongmen in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, which along with Israel have a common goal of frustrating Iranian expansion. What will be the fallout from policy reversals such as withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord and moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Does the United States see a path forward in troubled states such as Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Iraq? Is the United States headed toward war with Iran?
Interested in researching your family tree?   Please come exploring with the Orcas Island Genealogy Club on Tuesday, January 21 in the library Community Meeting Room from 10:30-12:30.

Happy 2020!!!

We will start off the Orcas Island Genealogy Club new year with an in-depth look at all Ancestry.com features. This will include organizing trees, customizing your home page, optimizing search results, successfully using hints, checking security settings, and creating beautiful genealogy presentations to share with your family.

This class will offer tips, tricks, and techniques for everyone from beginners to advanced researchers.  This is a lot to tackle in one session, and we can continue the topic into February if needed. Please bring your electronic devices and any questions you have. We would also love to hear about your favorite Ancestry tips.

The Genealogy club is open to anyone who is interested in exploring family genealogy–whether you have years of experience or are just wanting to begin now, you are welcome to join. The monthly meetings are free and happen on the third Tuesday of every month in the library Community Meeting Room from 10:30-12:30.

Dog-Whistles and Cat-Calls: The Modern Signs, Symbols, and Signals of Hate

Saturday, February 8 @ 6pm
 
From hand gestures to tattoos to code-words, Clyde W. Ford, author of Think Black, examines the signs, symbols, and signals of hate. He discusses their historical and cultural significance, laying bare the prevalence of hate-filled imagery in our culture.
DISPLAY CASE:  The Library invites you to help fill our display case.  We change themes monthly and are currently scheduling displays for 2020.  If interested, please email Lynn Johnson at ljohnson@orcaslibrary.org.
