HOLYOKE ROWS NEWS

January 2020

Hi All,
January 11th was our last barge row of the season. That is a record! Now it's two months of indoor fun before we are back out there again. If we have a few warm early spring days, we will get the barge painted before we put it back out.

Our annual meeting on January 11 was productive. Here are a few of the ideas that surfaced: an online store for Holyoke Rows swag, working with ECT to help promote green practices in our meeting room rentals, informational videos or blurbs to help prepare new participants for our programs, better road signage, more bilingual material and connecting with Valley Bikes about a hub in the parking lot.

In addition, the Board shared the new fee structure. Program rates have increased about 20%. For sweep rowers who also paid for membership, you will see a reduction in costs. Those who simply paid by the class, your fees have increased. Now everyone pays for exactly what they get AND everyone is a member. Row or kayak with us and you can tell people you are a member of Holyoke Rows. Grab some swag and you will look official. Scullers, you purchase a sculling package. Kayakers, you purchase a kayak package. Private boat folks, you purchase a storage package. Hopefully this simplifies things and is more equitable. You can find the details on our ever evolving website. Have you noticed it lately?

I've heard that some of you hate the winter. I love winter. I'm sitting next to my wood burning stove while I write this. I don't worry about the docks and I don't worry about the weather. And my office -  it is so quiet! Right around March, I will begin to miss the chaos and start to figure out how we will get the docks in the water. Until then, bring winter on!

GREEN ROOM WITH A VIEW

If you're looking for a place for a gathering, consider renting the boathouse event room which, among other things, has a view of the river. The space has seen book-club meetings, birthday parties and wedding fetes to name a few.

We encourage renters to be environmentally conscious. For instance, use recyclable plates and utensils or bring your real plates, glasses and silverware from home so you can wash them afterwards rather then create more trash. Use our composter and take advantage of the leave-something, take-something bin for party supplies that can be reused or that you had extras of (tablecloths?) and can pass on to the next renter.

DETAILS:
  • The fee is $125 per event for a 5-hour time slot. (Depending on the boathouse schedule, time is often available before your event to decorate). A $50 deposit is required to reserve the room and will be refunded after your event if there has been no damage to the room.
  • The room has freshly painted walls (Thank you, John!) and custom cork rails for hanging decorations.
  • The inside room measures 21 x 25 and can accommodate approximately 30 people.
  • For your use there are tables/picnic tables, chairs, outside grill, inside sink area, and restrooms.
  • There's lots of parking.
  • Reservations are available on a first come/first served basis.
For more information and to reserve the room, visit Holyokerows.org

WHO'S WHO AT HOLYOKE ROWS

Q & A with Charlotte Brunette, Coxswain

Q: What is the best about about being a coxwain?
Charlotte: The best thing is being able to use your voice and passion to motivate your team. I also really like making smooth turns because it makes me look cool. :)

Q: How did you find out about HR?
Charlotte: I found out about Holyoke Rows when I was 8- or 9-years-old through the kayak camp program!

Q: How do you keep rowers motivated?
Charlotte: I actually like to pretend I'm a jazzercise teacher when I cox, constantly upbeat and very fashionable!

Q: What do you like to do when you're not at Holyoke Rows?
Charlotte: I'm secretly a big nerd. I really like to draw and play DND.

Q: What's it like working with your sister Miranda, who's also a coxswain?
Charlotte: Working with Miranda has been interesting. We butt heads but we'll laugh about it together someday!

Q: Is it true you're leaving HR?
Charlotte: Yes. I’m going to (unfortunately) be leaving to pursue college, as I am a senior in high school. I hope to study government and to stay local!

Above: Charlotte on dry land. Charlotte, we'll miss you but wish you the very best.

WAY ENOUGH? WAIN UP? WA NUF?
What's the story behind the term?

Way enough is the command to stop rowing or, in some cases, whatever the rower is doing, such as walking with the boat overhead. "Way" is a nautical term for the movement of a boat through water (as in headway and right-of-way). The command "way enough," literally means enough moving the boat. It's often pronounced way-nuf, wane-up or wane-off.
