A members story from Switzerland
The other day I re-discovered the sale invoice of my first ever MG tucked away in the “Original MGA” book (by Anders Ditlev Clausager) in my library. At the lucky age of 22, on 20 August 1962, a brand new black, red leather seats, RHD, MGA MKII became mine! It was the last new MGA in Switzerland, once the all-new MGB was at the dealers.
Luckily, it seems that no-one wanted this lovely RHD, black MG … and at the time, I didn’t fancy the MGB’s “modern shape” compared to that of the beautiful MGA.

A new ’62 MKII was priced at 10’500.00 Swiss Francs (CHF). I added two Klippan seat belts (yes, already then for track days and fun – remember, no speed limits at the time on our Swiss roads!), two Talbot bullet shaped rear view mirrors on the wings (because of the RHD), a front radiator protection barre and a large luggage rack, all this for an additional CHF 359.00. These are all visible on the attached, first ever photo of my brand new treasure … from which I immediately withdrew its hubcaps to give it a sportier stance!

I’m thrilled to have been bitten by the MG bug, at age seven well before I could even drive. I was fascinated by a passing shiny, new red TC. There never was a doubt about my choice when the time came for me to get my first car! As the saying goes, “life is too short to own a boring car” and this has prevailed all my life. After finding the MGA’s invoice, I had a look at what similar new cars were worth here in 1962. Then, since I now own a fantastic ‘72 MG BGT bought in August 1999 (on the B register since then), I did likewise for when it was sold new in Switzerland. As you can see on the attached photo, it is now in excellent condition, having received a thorough long-term running restoration over the past twenty years and drives like a new car.

In the 1962 table, I also indicate the price of the first ’62 MGB . Likewise, for 1972 I also include that of the MKIII MGB – note that the BGT was almost the most expensive of all the others mentioned in the list!

When one reads how a ‘62 Austin-Healey MK II or a ’72 Morgan 4/4 are priced today on the classic car market, and knowing them quite well, I wonder why our great MGB marque has not done as well! They deserve it, being closely equivalent to many other sports cars available on the market then and still now. Indeed, a well sorted MGB, thanks to the hugely abundant supplies of parts new and old, is often more “modern traffic and owner friendly” than many other classics. A handsome B or BGT can be found on the current Classic Car market still priced close to their new prices of yore, while most others have rocketed.

When will our lovely, well designed, reliable, powerful, great sounding and good looking, head-turning MGBs’ current market values finally take off? Oh well! In fact it does not bother me too much personally, since our BGT is now a full family member, and is vied by one of my children, once my old bones stop me from either getting into or (preferably!) out of it, or some authority decides that I will have become a danger in traffic ...

Sunday the 19th of April 2020 will be to the day the 50th anniversary of the start of the World Cup Rally. Starting at Wembley Stadium this 16,000 mile epic car marathon finishing in Mexico City. The Historic Marathon Rally Group (HMRG) have organised an event at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon. Not only cars from the Mexico event will be on display including the winning Ford Escort FEV1H, kindly loaned by the Ford Motor Company, but also cars from the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon including the Jean Denton MGB now owned by the MGB Register. Other Rally cars old and new are also expected to be in attendance.

Green Stuff added to Marathon MGB

John & Mike tackle an oil leak on the Marathon MGB.
We had the Marathon MGB front wheels on ramps, then released the engine mounts after releasing the exhaust from the manifold. Then the engine was raised on a jack and pieces of wood put into the gaps of the engine mounts. This enabled us, I mean Mike, to undo the sump bolts. When the sump was eventually released from the block we could see why it was dropping oil. Mike carefully tapped the ridge to make it flat.
Then he refitted a new gasket, supplied courtesy of Moss Europe as were all the parts we required.
The following day we connected the exhaust to the manifold and pushed the car off the ramps, refitted the oil filter which is one the points up, then filled with Duckhams 20/50. Back in 1968 Jean Denton was sponsored by Duckhams on the London to Sydney Marathon.

MGB Roadster: 395 GLT
Tim would like to trace his father’s former car: ‘I am on potentially a wild goose chase seeing if I can track down the current whereabouts of the red MGB roadster that my father owned in the 70’s. I've seen some photos online and I can see it's currently taxed, so I was wondering if you had any records relating to it.’

MGB GT: BKG 233L
Does anyone know of Michael’s former car or their friends Pam, Derek and Bill?
I attach a picture of my late wife’s MGB GT in Mallard Green with wire wheels, webasto sun roof and tan interior. My wife Cathy who was a school teacher purchased the car with me in about 1977 from a family on Anglesey at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
We joined the MG Car Club and had a great experience on our first European tour to Luxembourg in 1978. We met some fantastic people including Pam and Derek who owned a White MGBGT V8 and Bill who had a Damask Red rubber bumper MGBGT V8. Both rescued us when our clutch failed near Fribourg en route to Winterthur Switzerland for the Summer event run by MGCC Luxembourg.
We took the engine out in an apple orchard belonging to a local cider manufacturer and next day with new clutch from BL/MG Fribourg arrived at the event. Two young people with no RAC/AA cover but just good MGCC friends, Great Times...
We kept the car for 4 or 5 years until children arrived, then we sold her to a lady in Childwall Liverpool. We lost track of the car and always wondered what happened and is it still going and with who today.
The car appears to survive and is on SORN so can your readers help?
I would also love to renew the contact with old MGCC members, Pam and Derek and Bill!
So what a task to try and achieve!

MGB GT: HON 100L and JJJ 507D
Rhys is trying to trace some history of HON 100L car which he now owns, it is a member of the MGB Register.
I was wondering if you had any records of my 1973 MGB GT being registered with yourselves in the past? Or any history you could inform me of? There is one of your stickers in the top left corner of the windscreen!
As an aside do you have details for JJJ 507D? This was owned by my father when he was younger!

MGB GT: FWL 212E
I wonder if you may be able to help me please. I'm trying to find any history of my car, registered 15th March 1967. The car is now Damask, with 'Biscuit' upholstery, but I believe was once a colour closer to RAF blue. The only history I have is that it was once owned by a gentleman, who was when I spoke to him in 2017, shortly after my purchase, a member of the '750' motor club. He was very helpful and gave me some information on its restoration while he owned it some years ago, but I've nothing much other than that. It also took part in the 1968 RAC Classic. It's had a few owners since then but sadly most of its history has been lost along the way. I would be very grateful if anyone knows anything about it.

MGB Roadster: FPM 599C
Hi, I have been looking for my first car a MK1 1965 MGB Roadster. I rebuilt the car from a wreck at the age of 17 having paid £300 for it. In 1988 I moved to Pembrokeshire and sold the MGB shortly after to get married and put down a deposit on my first house. I sold it to someone I believe in the Midlands and as far as I can understand the car is still owned by the same person. I also understand the car is now Iris Blue. I would love to see the car again and if possible maybe buy it back. I have fond memories of the little B and wonder if the car is known to you and you could pass on my details.
