5 January 2020
Dear Families,
Happy New Decade, Happy New Year, and welcome back to school! This week we celebrate Epiphany, the feast of the Magi, who, as wise ones, knew to seek out the Holy Family as they welcomed the Lord Jesus into the world. We can only hope to be so wise, and to give the same kind of time and attention to the wonders of God making God’s way into the world, teaching us how to be holy and good. It is a wonder that God made that choice, to show us the way into grace and holiness. We can only be grateful for such love and kindness on God’s part.

At Mercy, we have one week of classes before exams begin; exams, scheduled for January 14 – 17, mark the close of the first semester of school. During exams, school is quite different, as Mercy Girls (in full uniform) report only for their exams and follow the exam schedule. There are no classes and school does not follow our regular schedule. There is no lunch service during the exam period, so students need to bring their own lunches to school, and only seniors can come and go between exams. If a Mercy Girl has only a morning or only an afternoon exam, she need only report for that exam, as scheduled. Naturally, Mercy Girls should leave plenty of time to report for exams, arriving at school 20 or more minutes prior to the scheduled exam time. The exam schedule and all information related to exams, including the plan for inclement weather, is on the Mercy High School website.
There will be a full day of school on Monday, January 13, just prior to exams, and it will be a White Day. Magic Time will be scheduled at the end of the day, with dismissal at 2:15. January 13 will mark the end of the second quarter.

The World Language Department is offering a trip to Canada this summer, visiting Montreal and Quebec between June 22 and 26. There will be an important cultural element to the trip, which not only promotes a better language learning environment but also allows students to further broaden their global perspectives. The trip is open to the current French students and current Mercy students who took French at Mercy in the past. An initial meeting for parents and guardians who might be interested in this trip for their daughters will take place on January 16 at 6:30 pm in the school library.

On Thursday, the students who are spearheading this year's Mercy Girl Effect project will present about their experiences at the Mercy Leadership Conference last June in Philadelphia and announce the 2020 initiative. The Mercy Girl Effect is about developing and empowering young female leaders to understand our world and their place as Mercy women to become agents of change. This year's initiative will increase our awareness of climate change, identify our collective responsibility to care for and protect our planet, and specifically help the people in Africa's Sahel region who are increasingly impacted by Global Warming. Thank you to Mickey Burnett '21, Dasha Robinson '21, and Emily Ritzes '21 for bringing this important work of the Sisters of Mercy to us this year.

Finally . . .
In this new decade, we can hope for more wisdom and more holiness in our lives. Like the Magi, we can seek the Lord Jesus in all that we attend to and do. I wish each family the very best in this New Year!
Sincerely yours,
Jeanne A. Blakeslee
Principal
