Boonaroo 2020
 'the hottest time'
In this edition of Wattle & Quoll, we celebrate the Noongar season of Boonaroo (February- March) characterised by hot easterly winds and afternoon sea breezes.  During this time the local Noongar people would move to coastal estuaries to fish.

Fertilising the Farm
Is your money going down the drain? Farmers involved in the Regional Estuaries Initiative Soil Testing Program will be receiving their much anticipated soil test results at a workshop in February.

WHAT'S HAPPENING
Land for Wildlife protects Banksia Woodlands
Mandurah has some new additions to the Land for Wildlife family, with the Mathesons signing up to the voluntary program to show their dedication to protecting their patch of our catchment.
Memorandum of Understanding with Noongar Language Groups
Wiilman and Bindjareb Elders and TO’s have been working with the PHCC to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding outlining an agreement to work together for now and into the future.
Numbat Release in Dryandra 
PHCC, Project Numbat and local farmers were thrilled to be involved in the release of of nine numbats into Dryandra Woodland. The numbats, from Perth Zoo, will help boost genetic diversity and populations numbers in Dryandra.  PHCC supports Perth Zoo's Numbat Breeding Facility through our Numbat Neighbourhood Project. 
Over a decade of shorebird dedication
In early December the annual Shorebird count was run once again across the Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar Wetland. Over 60 volunteers were involved in this most recent count.  The count is a huge collaborative effort, coordinated by PHCC in consultation with BirdLife WA.
Landholders to benefit as wildlife program goes digital
On December 19th, the much-loved national wildlife conservation program, Land for Wildlife, went digital in Western Australia.  The new online platform will enable landholders to more easily join and participate in the Land for Wildlife program...read more
What do birds feed on at Lake McLarty?
In terms of area Lake McLarty only forms a small part of the Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar wetland system but it has a well earnt reputation for attracting disproportionally large numbers of waterbirds – but why is this the case?
The Murray Gets Bream 
More than 2000 juvenile black bream were released into the Murray River in late December 2019 through PHCC’s ‘Stock Enhancement of Black Bream in the Murray River’ project funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

WHAT'S HOT
Farmers Tackling Feral Cats
Over December and January, our upper catchments landholders have reported that they have trapped 16 feral cats. They are doing an amazing job!  We are supporting our Famers for Fauna landholders through our Numbat Neighbourhood project.
WHAT'S NOT
Garden Plants in our Wetlands and Bush
Ask anyone involved in looking after community bushland, bush reserves or national parks – one of the biggest threats to our unique flora and fauna is weeds. 
Vandalism at Ranford Pool
The Ranford Pool Restoration Project commenced in January 2019.  Both PHCC and the Friends of the Reserves – Boddington (Inc.) are disappointed with the recent vandalism to the tree guards and seedlings.  A busy bee was arranged to tidy up the site on 18th January.
