MEDIA RELEASE:

BASEL PEACE FORUM 2020:
Cities of Peace?

Basel, 5. December 2019

The Basel Peace Forum is the only one of its kind. It is the first forum in the world to address the issue of peace at the highest level and in an interdisciplinary manner. Over 250 leaders from business, diplomacy, academia and civil society from more than 20 countries will meet in Basel on 9. and 10. January 2020 to draw inspiration from new ideas on the topic of "Cities of Peace?

This year's edition of the Basel Peace Forum will be dealing with the topic of cities in time of conflict and peace. Cities are already home to half of the world's population and are expected to absorb almost the entire new population growth of the next years. Further, they provide opportunities such as access to a developed infrastructure, employment opportunities and inhibit a higher degree of social mobility compared to rural areas. However, cities are also becoming an increasingly risky place to live in, where neighbors turn into enemies, streets into frontiers, buildings into targets.

The Basel Peace Forum 2020 begins on Thursday evening, 9 January, with a discussion on the topic of "Cities of Peace" on the respective challenges surrounding the city, peace, conflict and security. This will be followed by a flying dinner.

On Friday morning, Elisabeth Ackermann, President of the Government of Basel-Stadt, will open the second day of the Basel Peace Forum, followed by a keynote speech by Christine Schraner Burgener, UN Special Representative for Myanmar, on "Urban Myanmar". The closing panel on Friday evening will be devoted to the theme "The gentle power of street art: insights from Kabul, Oaxaca and Diyarbakir".

Throughout the Basel Peace Forum, you will also have access to various "pavilions" set up to present and discuss a variety of activities related to peacebuilding. In one of these pavilions, for example, you can lead a nation in a computer game and learn how political decisions affect conflicts. You are also invited to be creative with artist collectives from Afghanistan and Mexico, or to visit an impressive exhibition of a young Kurdish activist.

Media representatives are cordially invited to the Basel Peace Forum on 9 and 10 January 2020 and can conduct interviews with the participants on request. For registrations and interview requests contact: amelie.lustenberger@swisspeace.ch or +41 76 592 39 75
