"Wild Waters"

Genesis 1:1-8 and Mark 1:1-13

The first story of creation begins with order being created from chaos, water covering the face of the earth, and the Spirit of God sweeping over the face of the waters.  When Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened up, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove... the heavens are ripped open to make room for God’s Spirit/Breath.
How about us? Are we prepared to recognize God’s Spirit among us in ways that are beyond our ability to comprehend?  What meaning do we find in our baptisms?  Where do we find order or meaning when we find chaotic waters around us?
Liz Bidgood Enders will be our guest preacher on January 12. We hope to see you then.

Faith Statement on Escalating Violence with Iran

As people of faith, we condemn the United States’ dangerous aggression towards Iran, including the assassination of Gen. Qassem Soleimani and the deployment of additional troops to the region. We urge the Administration to step back from the brink of war.

Our faith communities see the futility of war, and its power to dehumanize. We know that human flourishing entails breaking cycles of violence, being courageous peacemakers, and focusing on the root causes of conflict. Violent conflict is a path of mutual destruction.

Instead, all actors must move forward in a way that upholds our shared, sacred human dignity:

● All parties must begin by re-humanizing each other without excusing unjust and violent actions.

● The U.S. Administration must halt violent attacks and military escalations. It must return to a diplomatic process, recognizing that lasting peace requires a commitment to the shared well-being of every human, from Iran to the United States and everywhere in between.

● The U.S. Congress must act to reassert its war powers by refusing authorization for war with Iran and related attacks, and to block funding for war with Iran.

● U.S. actions and strategy in the region must address the root causes of the conflict, such as distrust, trauma, economic resources, and political influence.

● All of us must support nonviolent creative actions of resistance to any unjust and violent actions.

As communities of faith, we renounce the escalation of violence, and call on the United States to work towards lasting peace with Iran.

From Your Chats Last Sunday -- As Pastor Debbie recounted the story of the adoration of the baby Jesus by the Magi and their refusal to return to report to King Herod, our listeners and participants responded with their chats:
Daniel Finkbiner - a verse from "in the bleak midwinter" - What can I give him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, If I were a wise man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him — Give my heart.
Bobbi Dykema - I love thinking of the magi as resisters committing civil disobedience.
Larry Klingler - An insecure Herod tried to use deception to maintain his position, but he failed.
Petra Werner - living the birth of Jesus and not participating in the consuming of the Christmas season is my part honoring the faith.
Enten Eller - Interesting that Bethlehem is just 5-6 miles from Jerusalem... going home by a different road included a detour.....
Bobbi Dykema - So often following Jesus means going in a way we did not expect.
The Living Stream Church of the Brethren Board in its regular meeting on Tuesday:
  1. Affirmed the call of Marty Farahat to serve as church treasurer. A resident of Oceano, California, Marty will be working with Monica Rice, our present treasurer, to make the transition to serving as our new treasurer.
  2. Affirmed the call of Jen and Zech Houser to become part of the pastoral team of Living Steam. Jen and Zech are currently students at Duke Divinity School and are active in the Peace Covenant Church of the Brethren Durham, NC.
