Baptism of the Lord
Before Jesus begins his ministry he comes to the Jordan where he knows John is preaching and baptizing.  Jesus asks his cousin to baptize him as well.  John is hesitant and says to Jesus, “I need to be baptized by you!”
Jesus understands something however, that John perhaps does not.  Baptism isn’t what John does, or what even Jesus does. Baptism is about God’s claim upon and intervention into the life of the one who has come to the water.  So it is even today.  Our baptism is an act of God.  It is God’s claim upon us and God’s intervention into our lives.
This Sunday, we’ll revisit the story of the baptism of Jesus and use it as an opportunity to remember our own baptism and what it means. This Sunday, which comes shortly after the start of the new year each year, is a wonderful time to reflect upon God’s love for us, and God’s desire to be in relationship with each of us.  I hope you’ll be with us in worship this Sunday.
See you in church!

This month’s volunteer is Jenah Moody!  What a blessing it is to have her help in the Children’s Ministry!  She is currently the Bible Bootcamp leader on Sunday mornings and always helps with WOW and all the camps throughout the summer.  Also, have you seen the artwork in zones 3 and 5??  If not, come down to the children’s wing and take a look.  Her art skills are amazing!  Jenah is always someone whom I can go and talk through ideas with, and she is always one to come to me with awesome ideas too!  It has been such a privilege to not only be her coworker in the office, but to get to work with her in the Children’s Ministry as well.
I asked Jenah to answer some questions, and here is what she said:
Occupation – Communications Specialist at Woodlawn UMC and MDO Director
Favorite Color – Plum or mauve
Favorite Food – Japanese, chocolate
Hobbies – Reading, watching movies, playing board games with the kids.
Favorite Book – Remembrance
Favorite Vacation Memory – Taking my kids to the Frio River this past summer, watching them play with their cousins, and jump “the big rock” into the river.
As a child what did you want to be when you grew up? Writer
Favorite Bible Verse – Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jenah, THANK YOU so much for everything you do!  You are a blessing to this church and to the Children’s Ministry!

Blessings!
Jenna Roskilly
Director of Children's Ministry
God has been experienced in song, nature, and adventure for thousands of years. Our digital age threatens those opportunities as students have their attention stolen at every moment. Camp allows students the chance to slow down and experience God in an authentic way. Camp Horizon has been in ministry since 1947. Chances are, if you grew up in the Methodist church in Kansas, you have had the opportunity to attend either summer camp, retreats, or day trips to this beautiful sanctuary.  The Children and Youth Ministries here at Woodlawn encourage families to send their children in grades 1st -12th to camp each summer.  In order to assist our families in affording camp for their children we need your help.  Our prayer is that we are able to raise enough funds to cover 50% (up to a $100) for each camper attending.  Last year we had a total of 48 youth and 30 children attend camp. Your donation to our Campership Fund will be split evenly between our Youth and Children Ministries. Camp changes lives. Thank you for giving our children this opportunity.

Just Wanted to say, "Thank You!

Dear Woodlawn family – thank you so very much for the thoughtful finals care package! It was one of the nicest surprises & it definitely got me through the week. Thank you for always taking care of your church family – even those of us who are far away. Can’t wait to be home & celebrate Christmas with you! Thanks again – Natalie May

Here are two thank you notes that we received for the Overseas Christmas packages:

"I love my church, never have I seen so much love and care go into a package for someone they might only know by name. Unfortunately because of distance I haven’t been able to go back there since leaving high school. Yet they still show their love and appreciation no matter where I end up. This is the meaning of the season, go and show someone you care!" -Matthew Christians

“Received the care package from Woodlawn UMC yesterday and I would like to reach out to you to express our sincere appreciation! I shared the package with everyone in my team deployed here in Iwakuni, Japan, and they are all loving it! Thank you so much!
We are so grateful to receive this warm surprise from you and your Church. It is heart touching when I first opened the package and saw how the inner flaps of the USPS box were all decorated with the Christmas wrapping paper. The handmade cookies and a handmade Christmas card filled with all kind of love, what a heartfelt gift to us from across the World!
On behalf of my deployed Detail, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to you again. Thank you for your sharing, caring and support! Your kindness instills the positive spirit in myself and among my team, boosting the morale and reminding us to have a thankful heart. Every man and woman in our team is proud to serve the country and you and your Church reinforce the pride we have on conducting our jobs. Thank you very much!
Detail Iwakuni wishes you a warm and wonderful holiday session! Merry Christmas!!”

Prayer Group Begins Wednesday, January 22
Beginning Wednesday, January 22nd, and each Wednesday to follow, an open time of prayer will be led by Rev. Lance at 5:00 pm.  Anyone is welcome.  Lance will share a brief Scripture, after which the group will spend time praying for our church, nation, world, and local concerns, as well as specific prayer requests shared with our congregation.  No registration is necessary, just come when you are able.  Persons can choose to pray aloud or silently as they feel comfortable.
The group will meet in the prayer room just inside the Youth Center entrance and will conclude as the WOW Diner opens at 5:30 pm.

Disciple Fast Track New Testament Class Begins January 22
Enrollment is open for any who want to study the entire New Testament in 12 weeks using DISCIPLE Fast Track.  Rev. Outside Door Locks to Change January 14
Beginning Tuesday, January 14, all outside entrances directly into classrooms and offices will become “exit only” and external doorknobs and locks will be removed.  This is being done as a security measure, following a review by Woodlawn’s Safety and Security team and the Board of Trustees.
Beginning Tuesday, these entrances will be able to be opened only from the inside. Propping open any external door at Woodlawn is prohibited, as this allows our building and people inside our building to be at risk.  Persons will be asked to use one of the main entrances at the front or rear of the church building to access offices and classrooms inside.
While we know this is an inconvenience for members of our congregation and those who use our facility, the sad fact is we live in a very different time and culture today.  Woodlawn’s Trustees along with our Security and Safety team want to do whatever can be done to maintain a safer facility for all who utilize our building.
If you have questions, you may visit with Mike Stroot of the Woodlawn Safety and Security Team, or John Macera of the Woodlawn Trustees.
Signed Agreement Seeks UMC Separation
Key leaders within the United Methodist Church recently announced a plan for separating the UMC into two or more denominations as a means to resolve the issue of LGBTQ inclusion. The agreement was reached by a 16-member group composed of representatives from different factions of the UMC, including the traditionalist Wesley Covenant Association and the LGBTQ-affirming Reconciling Ministries Network. Bishops from the U.S., Africa, Europe and the Philippines participated.
The group’s work was aided by a professional mediator, Kenneth Feinberg, an attorney of the Jewish faith who has no vested interest in the United Methodist Church.  Feinberg previously helped oversee victims’ compensation funds after 9/11, and helped mediate victim compensation following the Mississippi Gulf oil spill.
The proposal, called the Protocol of Reconciliation & Grace through Separation, must still be approved by delegates to the UMC’s General Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Minneapolis in May.  It would be one of several proposals for the General Conference to consider, but under the new agreement, each leader who signed it promises to abandon all earlier proposals and put their full support behind the mediated Protocol.
The eight-page statement details the terms whereby the UMC’s traditionalist wing would depart to form a new denomination, leaving with a $25 million payment from the UMC, along with their properties, assets and memberships.
The UMC now has about 12.6 million members worldwide, including nearly 7 million in the U.S.  Many estimate that as many as one-third of the churches in the U.S. might leave the UMC to join a more traditional denomination.
Annual conferences and their churches would automatically remain in the United Methodist Church unless they vote to join the new Methodist denomination before July 1, 2021. In the meantime, the protocol would place a temporary halt to proceedings regarding charges against clergy and members who have violated the current prohibitions around homosexuality until after the departure of the traditionalists.
A helpful FAQ document has been prepared by United Methodist News that answers many questions about the Protocol.  It can be found at: https://www.umnews.org/en/news/protocol-of-reconciliation-and-grace-through-separation-faq   United Methodist News also is planning a live-streamed interview with some of the “Protocol” negotiators at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday, Jan. 13 on www.UMNews.org.
THURSDAY  6 A.M. MEN’S BREAKFAST & BOOK STUDY
Men! Start 2020 early at 6am on Thursday, January 16, with a sturdy breakfast and review of a thoughtful 2016 book with a startling title: “GOD: an autobiography, as told to a philosopher,” by Jerry L. Martin.
The title of the book invites skepticism, even scorn.  Dr. Martin, a lifelong agnostic, recounts an unexpected and lengthy encounter with God, who assigns to Martin the task of creating a written record from God’s narrative.  Besides conveying the words of the deity (in BOLD print) Martin describes his own progression from disbelief that the messages are truly Godly to an acceptance that he must act as God’s ghost writer.
Dr. Martin has been an educator and philosopher. He headed the philosophy department at the University of Colorado and later, the National Endowment for the Humanities.  He has published articles on public policy and education and has testified thereon to the U.S. Congress.  He left all that, his life’s work, to write this book, accepting the questions and rejections of his professional colleagues.
Martin is married to Abigail Rosenthal, professor emerita of CUNY; they reside in Pennsylvania.
Copies of this book are offered on Amazon for as little as $1.00.

This ad hoc group is aimed at men who commute to an 8am job; the breakfast always concludes by 7am. A volunteer reads excerpts of the book while the group eats, interrupts and debates.  Any donations in the past have been given to the Angel House Orphanage and School mission in Tanzania. This small group would welcome an influx of newcomers.  Some regulars think the food is safe to eat!  Call Frank O’Donnell (788-3224) or the church office (788-1507) for more information, or just show up at the Worship Center kitchen at 6am on Thursday, January 16.

PRAYERS:
Dear friends, thank you for all the prayers and good thoughts for our daughter Toni.  She was hospitalized for a mass on her kidney, liver and gall bladder. It turned out to be a massive staph infection. She was released on Christmas Eve but has a PIC line to continue on antibiotics and a bag to drain the abscess. She has been placed on home health care and is to remain homebound for the next three weeks. She is very thankful for all the prayers. Karen and Marvin Dunlap

Please continue prayers for Sue McLeland who remains in the hospital as doctors determine treatment options for her. Please continue prayers of support for her son, Steve.

Donna Brown is doing better. She is at Via Christi Ascension Rehab on Rock Rd. She will be there for a time, and then move to Winfield where her son lives. Please continue prayers of healing for Donna.

Marge Sweeney went to Derby Rehab Jan. 6 where they began to explore treatment options for her. Please keep Marge and Jim in your prayers.

Jean Anderson’s daughter-in-law, Sheila Hutchinson, is doing better. She had surgery on her shoulder and is home recuperating. Please continue healing prayers for Sheila and prayers of support for Jean and Sheila’s family.

Pat Cantwell sent an update on Mr. Ed. “With a grateful heart for the prayers from our Woodlawn Family, we have the results from "Mr. Ed's" MRI. He has two separate conditions that we are awaiting referrals on; L2 L3 bulging disc and will need an ESI Injection and they found an Aortic Aneurysm. We asked your continued prayers as we address these two conditions in the days ahead.”
Worshipers @ Woodlawn,
"Mr. Ed" & Pat Cantwell

Please keep Skeeter White in your prayers as he had surgery today on his foot/ankle to repair some ligaments. Prayers of healing and support are asked for both Skeeter & Millie.

Please keep Bob & Linda Bridgman in your prayers. Bob had an incident with his heart this afternoon and they have taken him into Wesley to check him out further.
