Outreach a Go?

Last year saw a new program called Outreach deliver ski lessons to Tier 3 elementary children.  The Outreach Program is a way to bring cross-country skiing to students in Prince George and surrounding areas that may otherwise not have an opportunity to try the sport out. Last year, the program reached approximately 1000 kids at over 10 schools and community groups. The visible impact was aired by CKPG on March 7 2019. The program is made possible with a partnership with Spirit North, Integris Credit Union, Atlas Gas, Northern Health and the City of Prince George.

Fast forward to today and we have a new coordinator, Andrew Keilty, but we still need two assistant coaches. If you want to join this paid position, please visit the CSNC website (Contact >Job Postings)

Explore More 55+

Caledonia continues to make an impact on the community with programs aimed at as many groups in Prince George as possible. The Explore More program reaches older adults aged 55+ who may otherwise find themselves inactive. Each year, a group of dedicated instructors who are 55+ themselves lead a ski lesson and a snowshoe lesson in January followed by three tours. Many of the people find it life altering by breaking them out of what would otherwise be an isolated time of year. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are one of the few activities people can do life long. To learn more visit the CSNC website (Programs & Lessons> Senior/55+)

Skiers Less Likely to Develop Depression

A long term study by Cross Country BC and published in Psychiatry Research found that skiers are 50% less likely to develop depression than the general population. An interesting study in that it differentiates out from other sports.

Biathlon Athletes Reach the Podium

In the midst of holidays and cold weather Caledonia Nordics biathlon team have still found time to put up some good racing. Right before the holidays in December the majority of our team travelled down to the beautiful venue at Sovereign Lake Nordic Center, Vernon, BC for the first BC Cup of the season. Competing in sprint and pursuit style races. It was a successful start having podium finishes in all categories we had athletes competing in. Special mentions to Nicholas Veekan and Moria Green for their golden weekend, in senior boys and girls categories respectively, and to Al Witwicki for his first ever clean shooting! (Pictured to the right is the Junior Girls category climbing the steep hill in Sovereign Lake.)

Promptly after the  holidays we had BC Winter Games trails for Zone 8 on home turf at Otway Nordic Center. Following a considerable snowfall the trail team was able to provide fast tracks leading to the  entire Caledonia Nordic Junior Biathlon team to qualify; Liam Sinclair, Aliah Turner, Artemis Douglas, Payton Sinclair and Iona Caddell, along with Laura Balkwill from Cariboo Ski Touring Club in Quesnel. This athletes will be representing our region in Fort St.John this February!

Unfortunately, due to a record breaking coldsnap the Prince George BC Cup was postponed from January 11-12th to January 25-26th. The organizing committee is still looking for volunteers to help, if you’re available please consider lending a hand that weekend! Or at least come check out and cheer on your local biathletes who have trained most of the year for events just like this one!

ProD camp for your energetic little ones! Join Sadie and Sage for a half or full day of snow camp on the SD57 Non Instructional Day Jan 27, 2020. Participants MUST pre-register. Check out the CNSC website (Programs & Lessons>Camps) for more details.

- Carolyn Thorp, School Ski Coordinator

SDP (Jackrabbits) is off to a great start despite the recent chill on lessons. Thanks to our new signs, everyone is finding their coach(s) and getting out on the snow quickly. Looking forward to the temperatures warming somewhat in the next couple days and getting back on the snow! Thanks again to our partner Save-On Foods for supplying oranges, apples, cookies and juice - a satisfying end to each Jackrabbit session.

The CNSC Family Ski Tour returns! Some family friendly competition to see which family is able to accumulate the most kms skied. The winners? Bragging rights and everyone enjoying a hot lunch to wind up a most excellent day of XC skiing.  Come out on February 23!

Check out the upcoming Caledonia Wine Tour featuring BC wines, tasty food and super ski trails - how could it get any better? Information and registration available at  CNSC website (Events>Club Events>Caledonia Wine Tour)
