Habitat partnered with the Benson Family in 2014. Iris wasn't even a twinkle in their eyes then - she's the newest addition to the Benson Family. Iris was born in August of 2019 and shortly after she was born the Benson's learned she had Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.
It has been a long journey for Iris and the Benson Family. You can read the Caring Bridge site they've set up.
Here's their most recent update from December 19, 2019:
This afternoon Iris got to take a field trip down the hallway to move to a new room! She liked it for the first half and then decided we weren't going fast enough or maybe too fast but she stopped fussing once mom picked her up and she could see that Dad had traveled with us also. It's a good sign when you move down the hallway, we always hope it means we're getting closer to home.
She is off the CPAP machine and now on high flow oxygen at 4 liters. She's been doing well with it and her diaphragm and lungs seem to be looking good from the x-rays so that's great news! We'll keep praying she tolerates going down a little bit at a time on the oxygen and gets to room air eventually. She's getting 30ml/hr of my breastmilk through the NJ tube still, she needs to be down to 2 liters of oxygen before we can nurse as right now there's too much air flow and they'd be afraid she'd aspirate.
She continues to be happy and smiley for the most part and loves the giraffe stuffed animal that we picked out for her for Christmas. She's been laying next to it trying to hold it's hand and feeling it's soft fur for a couple of hours now.
She continues to get antibiotics for any of the infections that may still be in her body but she's not exhibiting any symptoms that would suggest she still does and her white blood cell count has come down so it's more of a precaution to be sure. Other than that she's still on Heparin to prevent blood clots from forming and she still gets some nebulizer treatments.
We're following Iris' lead and going at a slow pace in order to give her body time to heal and not overwhelm her lungs and diaphragm. From a cardiac standpoint she doesn't have any concerns which is a blessing, they'll do an echocardiogram tomorrow to check her heart and that left pulmonary artery she had patched to check again as a follow-up.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support, little by little she's working towards being home again. Every day she's making improvements and getting stronger, she really is amazing.
Please keep Iris and the Benson's in your prayers.
