John Long

The NCDA Credentialing Commission (CC) is proud to be completing its second calendar year of official operations. This is in large part due to the dedication of the commission members and the expert leadership of Dr. Marilyn Maze, Dr. Constance Jenkins Pritchard and Dr. Cynthia Marco Scanlon. In October 2019, Debra Ruddell, M.S., CCC (NCDA Leadership Academy 2018-19 graduate) was selected to serve a 3 year term on the CC, as the key representative for the Certified Career Counselor credential. Debra replaces James Westhoff, M.Ed., CCC, who now serves as 2019-20 Chair-Elect of the CC. John Long, ED.S., CMCS, (president elect of FCDA) now serves as the Chair of the CC.

In Spring 2019, the CC introduced NCDA’s Continuing Education Manual, as support for the 30 continuing education contact hours which credential holder must document over a 3 year period, for the renewal of their certification. The CC is excited to have launched the Certified School Career Development Advisor (CSCDA), in fall 2019. The CSCDA credential is built upon NCDA”s new School Career Development Advisor training program (160 contact hours of specialized training from an approved NCDA-SCDA Instructor or Master Trainer).

NCDA”s Board of Directors and CC are looking forward to 2020, with a continued focus on the professional development, support and advancement of professionals in the field of career development and career services. FCDA encourages its members to set the professional goal of earning a true competency based credential through the NCDA Credentialing Commission.

Listed below are brief descriptions of NCDA’s 6 professional credentials. Full information on the NCDA Credentialing Commission (under Credentialing) can be reviewed on the NCDA website.

Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP) -- a credential for individuals from an array of backgrounds, to deliver services and demonstrate core competency in the field of career services.

Certified Master of Career Services (CMCS) – recognizes the contributions of professionals who have mastered a variety of coaching, advising, and consulting roles in the field of career services.

Certified Career Counselor (CCC) – the new standard of professional excellence for individuals trained as counselors, who will specialize in the delivery of career counseling services.

Certified Clinical Supervisor of Career Counseling (CCSCC) – a new professional credential to recognize the contributions of individuals who serve as clinical supervisors to career counselors and other practitioners who provide career services.

Certified Career Counselor Educator (CCCE) – a new professional credential intended to recognize the contributions of individuals whose primary focus is on the training of new counselors who will specialize in the field of career counseling.

Certified School Career Development Advisor (CSCDA) - this credential is intended for providers who work in the K-12 sector (children and youth ages 5 – 18) to ensure students are prepared for meaningful work and high-demand careers. Individuals may work with other staff to coordinate the design, implementation, and monitoring of school and community based efforts to improve the chances of students entering the job market with skills, knowledge, and credentials to be competitive.
