The Cutting Edge

For our food insecure population, health is a huge issue: residents of food deserts are more likely to suffer from diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.  In the US, half of all deaths from those chronic illnesses are linked to poor diet. One of SHARE's solutions? The Food-Pharmacy Model.

What is Food-Pharmacy?

Under the Food-Pharmacy model, patients with chronic illnesses will receive a prescription that can be redeemed at SHARE for a food package containing healthy dry goods and fresh fruits and vegetables.

SHARE's food pharmacy will begin as a pilot program; a partnership between SHARE and the United Health Centers. The program will be the first of its kind in Winston-Salem. In this collaborative partnership, doctors will prescribe the healthy food for patients to eat, and in turn, SHARE will provide that food to the patients free of charge. Through this pilot we will have the opportunity to research its trials and successes in order to improve the program for future years!

The Food-Pharmacy Model has been gaining nationwide popularity, with similar programs already succeeding in New York City, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. SHARE hopes to join the movement by bringing this cutting edge health development home to Winston-Salem and by improving the lives of locals for generations to come.

Sowing the Seeds of Cooperation
We're deep in the holiday season which means good cheer and good food for everyone! But even as we take time to enjoy our families and friends, the winter holidays are also the perfect opportunity to peer into the new year. As you all know, SHARE is cooking up an exciting 2020, the question is: how can you be involved even before our doors officially open?

Knocking on doors & drumming up support

Co-ops can't succeed without support from their members--it's right there in the name, cooperation, and this means we need each of you! Currently, there are over 350 member-owners in our cooperative, but when our doors open on June 1st, we need 500 members in our co-op. The good news? If we recruit just one member per day from now until June 1st, we'll reach our goal with almost a whole month to spare.

So, how do we do it? Persistence and persuasion. In January, SHARE will start its Member-Owner Recruitment Campaign. We'll be knocking on doors, tabling at events, and hosting pop-up markets to build support and organically grow our co-op family.

That's where our volunteers come in: as incredible as the SHARE staff is, we can't be everywhere at once! We need volunteers who are willing to knock on those doors with us, who are excited to make a new friend while working our SHARE booth, and who are prepared to bring an old friend to all our Harvest Market events.

So keep two ears open and tell all your friends; starting this January, SHARE will be counting on you!

Wishing happy holidays to everyone,

The Reverend's Corner

In the last days of December, the ground looks cold and hard. Several comrades have been doubly wrestling with the concept of Equity; it too could seem cold and rigid. Yet, in a few days, the ground will warm and flowers will peak from their dormancy. My faith invites that certainty.

"Food insecurity" is a fact too many folks don't know exists. The blessed among us drive to a food market and simply pick the food items we crave. But consider for a moment what you would do if you had not the economic wherewithal that provides access to fresh, nutritional food. Study-after-study has shown that food insecurity is a problem in Winston-Salem. Much like the end-days of December, this fact seems cold and hard.

Merriam Webster's collegiate dictionary defines Equity in this way (and I quote):
  1. Justice according to natural law or right specifically: freedom from bias or favoritism; b: something that is equitable.
  2. a body of legal doctrines and rules developed to enlarge, supplement, or override a narrow rigid system of law.
When peering through the lenses of hope and faith, something more appears. While the grandeur of the holiday season is evaporating in our rear view mirrors, we long for the spring, where you and I make a difference by sharing with those who are even  "the least of these."

I invite you to come with us in 2020 and be a part of our vision this spring wherein we open the Harvest Market. We need your help and look forward to the possibilities.

   Peace and Blessings,
   Elder Gary R. Williams
